and Billy was petting it," John said. "Of
course when I tried to get a photo with
my phone, the gopher popped back into
the hole.
"Remarkable things", John said, "happen around here all the time."
The Taylors feel the responsibility of
keeping their family, the land and their
herd healthy for future generations.
Following the maternal line of Karen's
family, the Taylors' two daughters are
the seventh-generation of women dairy
ranchers in northern California; five of
them in West Marin. As Karen puts it,
her daughters come from a long line of
"bossy women" who know how to run
not only their families, but the family
businesses.
Karen and John dream their children
will want to run the ranch one day, but
"we want our children to go out and experience the world like we were able to
do," Karen said. And they hope that like
she did, they will find their way back
home. n
