To avoid a gap in coverage resulting from the cancelation of last year's con- test due to the pandemic, entries will cover any stories, photographs or sections published from May 1, 2019 through Dec. 31, 2020. Bills impacting public notices filed for session The Hoosier State Press Association is in the process of reading the hundreds of bills filed for the 2021 Indiana General Assembly and have identified several that should concern member newspapers. HSPA executive director and general counsel Steve Key is reaching out to the authors of high priority bills to see what can be done about language we oppose. Following are the bills of highest concern so far: H.B. 1498, authored by Rep. Doug Miller, R-Elkhart, would eliminate the publication requirement of public notices for all state and local government units. Publication in local newspapers would be replaced by posting on government websites. HSPA does not know at this time whether Rep. Miller decided to file this bill on his own initiative or is carrying it for someone else or some entity. S.B. 332, authored by Sen. Jim Buck, R-Kokomo, would impact all public notices that currently require publication more than once in local newspapers. Those notice requirements would change to HSPA Foundation offers monthly health column for members See Update, page 5 The Hoosier State Press Association Foundation is launch- ing Hoosier Health – a monthly column on health issues impact- ing Indiana written by Trudy Lieberman. Hoosier Health will be a continuation of the Community Health News Service col- umns that HSPA Foundation have distributed for the past eight years. This new column will focus on the business, consumer, policy, and clinical domains of the health care land- scape in Indiana. It will explain the biggest health issues facing the state's residents and some not- so-well publicized problems that concern many people. "The pandemic has exposed the deep cracks in the U.S. health care system putting its inequities and shortcomings on full display," Lieberman said. "As the country moves toward repairing the dam- age caused by the virus, we will explore how various strategies and fixes will affect Indiana resi- dents." OMC is a partnership of America's Newspapers, the Iowa Newspaper Foundation and press associations throughout the United States and Canada. Programs offered by OMC cover advertising, digital, editorial and management topics. Sessions last approximately 60 minutes. Recent programs have included "Rural Journalism" and "Public Notice Best Practices."
