The Charger boys fell by a score of 74-66, with four individual firsts and two winning relays. The Pike Central girls were first and second in both the 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay, but were DQ'd in the 400 free. Maddy Riley, Emma McKinney, Jenna Mey- er and Jillian Bailey had a win- ning time of 2:16.30 in the 200 medley, and Avery Hunt, Shel- by Keeker, Taylor Oswalt and Kayla Gladish teamed for sec- ond in 2:27.14. Jillian Bailey, Maddy Riley, Emma McKinney and Addy Russell combined for a 2:05.72 to win the 200 free relay. Kay- la Gladish, Ella Adams, Shel- by Keeker and Taylor Oswalt teamed for second in 2:18.56. The 400 free relay team of Av- ery Hunt, Addy Russell, Mad- dy Riley and Emma McKinney had a winning time but were DQ'd. Also DQ'd at the meet were divers Tessa Vinnedge, Sallee Morgan and Trent Zim- merman. Six individual firsts were claimed by the Lady Char- gers, including Addy Russell, Taylor Oswalt (2), Jillian Bai- ley (2) and Emma McKinney, Addy Russell took first in the 200 free (2:38.17), with Gab- by Collins fourth (2:57.10) and Ella Adams fifth (3:03.29. McKinney clocked 1:25.80 to win the 100 breast and Keeker was second in 1:34.22. Oswalt won the 200 IM in 3:20.72 and Morgan Salle was third in 3:56.03. Oswalt also took the 100 fly in 1:28.67, with Salle second in 2:04.39. Bailey claimed the 50 free win (28.64), with Avery Hunt sec- ond (31.33) and Keeker fourth (33.98). Bailey also won the 100 back in 1:12.28, with Mad- dy Riley second in 1:13.32. Avery Hunt was second in the 100 free (1:11.12) with Addy Russell third (1:12.57) and Kayla Gladish fourth (1:12.88). Gabby Collins swam a 7:42.59 to second in the 50 free. Charger boys won the 200 and 400 free relays and Draven Readle, Isaac Burdette and Chargers turn up the heat against White River Valley, win 53-50 By Andy Heuring Pike Central's boys turned up the defensive heat and applied pressure on White River Valley for 90 feet. The defensive pressure created momen- tum for the Chargers on both ends of the floor and helped them get their first win of the season as they ral- lied from 10 points down to win 53- 50 Thursday night. Pike Central was led by freshman Julian Gish's 16 points. He was 9 of 10 from the free-throw line, includ- ing both ends of a bonus in the last minute of the game as the Chargers held off a three-point shooting bar- rage by White River Valley. The Chargers also got 25 points collectively from their seniors start- ers, as Sean Hanselman had 15 and Ethan Gorby 10. Pike Central trailed 14-4 with just more than two minutes left in the first quarter. White River Valley was driving past Pike Central de- fenders nearly uncontested. Wolver- ine freshman guard Max Hostetter had eight first-quarter points, most- ly on drives. But after a 10 -point defi- cit was amassed by White River Val- ley, Charger coach Hunter Elliott had enough. "That is something we have kind of preached to them. Our intensity isn't something we should have to worry about. We have to have that in- tensity every night. They ( White Riv- er) had seven or eight layups getting in the paint on the drive," said Elliott. He switched Pike Central to full court pressure. It had an immediate impact. Just more than a minute lat- er, Gorby had scored on a Wolver- ine turnover. Then Gish dropped a three-pointer to cut the lead to 14-9. Quade Morton came off the bench and hit a three to make it 19 -12. Gish picked off a cross court pass as White River was trying to get the ball across the centerline against the Chargers' press. He was fouled on his break to the basket. He hit both free throws, cutting the lead to 22-18. Then Peyton Howald got a steal and a layup to make it 22-20. Hanselman had a steal, but missed the layup. The Chargers missed four lay-ups in the second quarter or the comeback would have been quicker. Most were off of steals or turnovers their defen- sive pressure was creating. Gorby got a steal and layup to make it 24-22 with 1:20 left. Pike Central missed another layup off a steal that would have tied the game seconds before the end of the first half. Pike Central started the second half with a steal and layup by Gish to tie the game 24-24, but the first of Hostetter's three three-pointers in the third quarter made it 27-24. The second three by Hostetter made it 30 -26. Then the Chargers went on a run. Gish scored his fifth point of the quarter at the 5:33 mark on a layup after a steal. He hit a free throw one possession earlier. Pike the took the lead 32-30 when Howald drilled a three-pointer. Pike Central's 14-2 run would continue un- til they led 41-32. It included Morton and Howald hitting three-pointers. A Hanselman drive made it 41-32. Hostetter came back into the game, and along with senior Jadon Rogers, the Wolverines fought back into the game. A three by Hostetter and a layup by Eli Crites cut the Chargers' lead to 43-42 with 4:37 left. Baskets by Gor- by and Hanselman pushed the lead back to 47-42 with 2:49 left. Hansel- Grapplers best Princeton 45-30 Nine Pike Central wrestlers notched a 32-15 record in matches at the For- est Park Invitational this past Saturday. Coach Caleb Cherry said, "I'm very hap- py with their performance. They defi- nitely came out ready, knowing this was the last time on the mat for awhile. We had a rough couple of matches this week and they wanted to redeem themselves. Several kids stepped up to set the tone and lead. They've worked hard all year and it's good to see them getting some reward for that." Coach said the team notched a 45 -30 win over Princeton, with "Skylar Shel- ton (160) pinning his opponent (Quin- tin Wilkerson) in one minute and 30 sec- onds into the first period. Kale Speedy (132) lost by pin 1 minute and 45 sec- onds into the second period and Cody Davis won by a 7-5 decision over Kamer- on Berry." Griffin Boyd (120) finished 4-1 with two forfeits, pins against North and North Knox and a loss to Forest Park. Ryan Gladish collected two quick pins with Princeton and North Knox, one for- feit, a loss to North by pin and a techni- cal fall to Forest Park. Jon Cannon (145) had a loss to South Spencer, but pinned his opponents from Princeton, Forest Park, North Knox and added a 7-1 win with Evansville North. Jackson Stuckey (152) was 5 -0 with quick pins with Princeton, Forest Park and North, and a forfeit with South Spen- cer. Skylar Shelton (160) was 3-2 on Sat- urday with two quick pins, a forfeit and two losses by pin to South Spen- cer and Evansville North. Isaac Shimer (170) had two losses by pin with South Spencer and Evansville North, and for- feits with Princeton and Forest Park. Kale Speedy (182) recored wins by pin against North Knox and South Spen- cer, a Forest Park forfeit and an over- time loss at North after a 7-7 tie. Corey Goeppner (195) was 5 -0 with early falls against Princeton and North, plus forfeits from Forest Park, North Knox and South Spencer. Cody Davis (220) won his Princeton match by 7-5 over Kameron Berry, took a forfeit for Forest Park and fell by pin to South Spencer and North. Evansville North claimed a 60 -18 win, with Corey Goep- pner (195) and Griffin Boyd (120) win- ning by pin, and Jon Cannon (145) and Jackson Stuckey (152) winning by de- cisions. Lady Chargers fall to Washington, 72-27 By Andy Heuring Pike Central's girls ran in- to a buzz saw last Thursday at Washington. A fter getting off to a strong start, the La- dy Chargers couldn't keep up and end up in a lopsided 72-27 loss. Washington is one of the better teams in Southern Indi- ana. They have a 12-1 record so far, with their only loss be- ing to Evansville Memorial in December. They have beat- en seven opponents by 20 or more so far. "They are probably the best team we will play this season," said Charger Coach Kyle Mc- Cutchan. Pike Central entered the game without one of their leading scorers and rebound- ers in Mallory Hunt. Kya Leighty helped the Chargers get off to a good start as she had six points in the first quarter. Senior Mal- lory Hickey knocked down a three and Brailey Mills add- ed a field goal for 11 points in the first. Pike Central trailed only 18 -11 going into the sec- ond period. "We played real hard and got after it in the first half. We knew they were a really good team. We scraped hard, they pressed and it led to some turnovers that hurt us," said McCutchan. The combination of Alaina Throne with 24 points and Kencia Levassew with 19 points was too much for Pike Central to overcome. "We really struggled to score in the second half," said Quade Morton gets his range on a three-pointer. Morton hit a three shortly after coming off the bench to help spark a Charger comeback against White River Valley.
