The team of Luff, Burdette, Cobey McKinney and Michael Burkhart placed second in the 200 medley relay, about a sec- ond behind the Jeeps by clock- ing 2:08.78. McCutchan. To make matters worse, Pike Central was notified on Friday that one of Washing- ton's players tested positive for COVID. So Pike Central is now on a two-week quar- antine. Their next game is scheduled for January 23 with Barr-Reeve. Games be- tween now and then have been postponed. "None of our kids have shown any symptoms yet," said McCutchan. man's was particularly big. He was in a double team trap near the time line, but he spun out of it, dribbled toward the top of the key, then cut down the lane for the driving basket, when it looked like it was go- ing to be a turnover. A three-pointer by Rogers cut Pike Central's lead to 49 - 47 with 2:23 left. It looked like Pike Central may be running out of energy. Coach Elliott said good play and solid minutes off the bench by seniors Connor Young, Garrett Boyd and Ad- en Brown is going to allow the Chargers to play more full- court pressure. Over the next minute, the team exchanged baskets, be- fore Gorby made it 49 -45, hit- ting two free throws with 1:02 left. Rogers was then fouled shooting a three that just rimmed out. He went to the line and hit the first two, mak- ing it 49 -47. White River went to a full- court pressure. They had the possession arrow and got the ball on a jump ball call with 43 seconds left. Pike Central was able to prevent a score and got the ball back. Gish was fouled with 18.9 seconds left. He stepped to the line, shooting a bonus free, leading by two. He hit both and Pike had the lead 51-47. Rogers launched a bomb from two steps behind the three-point line. It ripped the nets and had the Wolver- ines just one point back at 51- 50 with 9.3 seconds left. Pike had to take the ball out under White River's basket. White River swarmed them, but Morton broke down the floor and caught a long pass near the free-throw line and was fouled. He went to line with seven seconds left lead- ing by one and shooting a one and one bonus. He hit both. Pike was up 53-50 and man- aged to force an off-balance shot that hit nothing at the buzzer. "We needed that," said Coach Elliott of the win. "I think we have kind of come up short a couple of times and the win is just good for our confi- dence moving forward." Elliott praised the play of freshmen Gish and Morton. Morton came off the bench and hit a three right away. "Quade, once he came in, he was playing so well, he hard- ly came out the rest of the game," said Elliott. "They (Gish and Morton) both played really well. They have a bright future. They can be program changers for us," said Elliott. The White River Valley game was one of three the Chargers played in the Green County Invitational. On Wednesday night, the Chargers opened play with Eastern Greene. They fell be- hind quickly, trailing 12-5 af- ter one quarter. It got worse in the second quarter as Bryson Creager had 13 first- half points, including nine in the second quarter to push the Thunderbirds' lead to 26 -11 at halftime. If there was any doubt about the game, a hot Thunderbird team erased it, as they scored 22 points in the third quarter. Four different Eastern Greene players scored at least five points in the third quarter. Creager finished with a game- high 23 and Sam Rees added 14 for the 6 -6 Thunderbirds. CHARGERS FALL TO SHAKAMAK BY 10 Pike Central came out flat against Shakamak on Satur- day and it cost them. Shaka- mak sprinted to a 12-0 lead in the first and were able to hold the Chargers off for a 48 -38 win. Coy Gilbert led the Lakers' early charge with nine first quarter points. They got a bas- ket from three other players to make it 15 -3 after the first quarter. Sean Hanselman had all three of Pike Central's points on a field goal and ensuing free-throw. The Chargers turned things around in the second quarter, as they put up seven points on offense, with Morton hitting a three, and Gorby and Gish both get- ting field goals. Their defense improved as well as they held Shakamak to seven points in the quarter to go into halftime trailing 22- 10. The same 12-point margin they started off with. Gish gave them a big boost in the third quarter scoring, nearly doubling what they did in the first half. Gish propelled their 19 -point third quarter with eight points. He got sup- port from sophomore Kendric Sorgius, who hit a three and made a free throw. Brown al- so hit a three in the rally and freshman Morton added four points. The rally cut Shakamak's lead to 35 -29. In the fourth quarter, Shakamak was able to hold off the Chargers as they hit six of eight free throws, out- scoring the Chargers 13-9 in the fourth quarter for the 10 -point win. Shakamak is now 4-5, but have won three of their last five games.
