The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, May 22, 2013 B-5 PCMS Spring Sports Teams First turkey for Fiscus Seven-year-old Madelyn Fiscus got her first Turkey while hunting with her father Joshua Fiscus on Saturday, May 11. Madelyn's turkey weighed 16 pounds and had a five inch beard. Madelyn is the daughter of Joshua and Winter Fiscus, of Winslow. Men's Golf League The Prides Creek Men's Golf League has a single leader and a new team won the weekly tournament at Prides Creek Golf Course. The weekly winner, shooting seven under par, was the team of Jason DeWeese, Joe Burkhart, Ryan Houchins, Mike Higdon and Larry Barr. Tater Mosby leads the point standings with 425 points; Jeff Clark 400; Larry PCMS Chargers boys' track team The Pike Central Middle School Chargers boys track team had a good season in 2013. The first half of the league ends June 27. Girls tennis camp Younger girls, through middle school age, will have a chance to learn about tennis this coming summer. The Pike Central Lady Charger Girls' Tennis Camp will be offered this summer to girls going into fourth through eighth grade, in two sessions. The first session is seven days in June and the cost is $35 per session and includes a T-shirt. The dates for Session I are June 3-6 and June 10-13 on the Pike Central High School tennis courts. The second session is June 17-20 and June 24-27 and the cost is $35. All campers receive a Charger tennis T-shirt. Additional shirts are $10 each, size small through extra large. Both sessions will feature instruction and play against each other. The beginners session will be from 4 to 4:45 p.m. and the intermediate session from 5 to 6 p.m. If that time schedule does not work for someone, they should contact Coach Lisa Hohler at (812) 630-1607 to see if other arrangements can be worked out. The Beginners Group is designed to teach proper strokes, movement and knowledge of the game. "We have a middle school team and it is important they know the basics of the game," said PC Coach Lisa Hohler. The Intermediate Class is designed to help advance a player who already has the fundamentals down. It helps them learn placement and overall court play. The camps are limited to the first 12 players. to register for each session. The deadline to register is May 13. For additional information, contact Coach Lisa Hohler at (812) 630-1607. Brittney Coan plays in NAIA Tourney By Mike Johansen Pike Central graduate Brittney Coach has just return from Alabama where the Indiana UniversitySoutheast Lady Grenadiers tennis team competed in the NAIA National Tennis Championships. The IU Southeast women's tennis team lost to Northwood (Fla.) in the first round of the 2013 NAIA Women's Tennis National Championships on May 14. IU Southeast finishes the season with a 13-7 record. The team went undefeated in KIAC conference play with a spotless 8-0 record. The Grenadiers won their 14th consecutive KIAC title this season and placed five student-athletes on the allconference team. Coan was teamed with Katie Morrison at No. 3 doubles for the tournament and they lost to Julia Ferraz and Maelanie Snowberger of Northwood 2-8. The team lost to Northwood 0-9. Coan and Morrison defeated Emily Underwood and Katie Pile of IU-East 8-5 in the first round of the Regional Tournament. They lost to Kim Mella and Sara Richert, Indiana Wesleyn 2-8 in tourney finals. The team was 9-2 for 2012-13 Fall and Spring seasons. Coan was a standout player and student at Pike Central during her high school career. She started competing as a freshman and has just ended her third season. In the KIAC championships, Coan teamed with Katie Michelle Houtsch Morrison in doubles to help the team win the championship. They gained the finals by defeating Carlow College 5-0 and beating IU East 5-0. In the championship match against Asbury College, Coan and Morrison picked up an 8-5 win over Amis and Withrow of Asbury to help the team to a 5-1 win and the championship trophy. Coan is one of two juniors on the team, along with three sophomores and two freshmen. She is the daughter of Rich Coan and Tammy Coan. Deadline for Sports News is 5 p.m. Every Monday PCMS Chargers golf team The Pike Central Middle School Chargers golf team recently ended their season. This was the first year for middle school golf and they had a very good turn out. Most of the area middle schools don't play in the spring so the kids worked on their long and short game, along with learning some rules of the game. They hope to play some matches next fall. Girls basketball camp, open gyms set There are a lot of girls' basketball activities coming up at the end of school and in June, with camp the first week of June and open gyms on several dates. Basketball camp time for girls in grades one through four is coming up June 3 through June 6, with the Pike Central Lady Chargers Basketball Camp. The camp will be in the Pike Central Middle School Gym each morning from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. for girls in grades one through four (grade in as of this fall). The cost of the camp is $20, which includes the camp T-shirt. The fee for each additional child of the same family is $15 each. To be guaranteed a T-shirt, camp fees and registration should be postmarked by Friday, May 17 and mailed to: Pike County Girls' Basketball Camp, Attn: Coach Randy Graham, Pike Central High School, 1810 East State Road 56, Petersburg, IN 47567. Make checks payable to Coach Randy Graham. Camp fees and registration should be completed as soon as possible. Registration should indicate T-shirt size and give all other needed information. Campers will work closely with the coaches and the Lady Chargers basketball team members. There will also be an Open Gym for girls going into grades five through eight on several dates in the middle school or high school gym to learn the basic skills needed for good basketball. The IHSAA physicals and Dubois Bombers to open The Dubois County Bombers will get underway May 30 with an exhibition game on May 30. The Bombers are coached by Pike Central baseball coach Wes Fink. Catch an early glimpse of this year's Bombers squad in an exhibition game against the Old School All Stars on Thursday, May 30, at 7 p.m. at League Stadium. All seats are just $3. The 2013 Dubois County Bombers home opener on Sunday, June 2, will include the appearance of "A League of Their Own" personality Stilwell 'Angel' Gardner. Most remembered for his humorously annoying antics and chanting of "You're gonna lose. You're gonna lose." Stilwell was played by Justin Scheller who will be joining us at the game and will be available for pictures and autographs. The Bombers play in Huntingburg's League Stadium where much of "A League of Their Own" was filmed as it was the home field of the Rockford Peaches. Gates will open at 5 p.m. for the home opener with the Bombers taking on the Fulton Railroaders. forms must be turned in prior to participating in the open gyms or camps. There will be drills, learning sessions and games. The main goal is to see each camper have fun, improve their skills and receive the tools they need to get better throughout the summer. They will stress fundamental skills during the camp so players can work on them throughout the summer. There will also be contests at the end of each session.
