B-4 Wednesday, May 22, 2013 The Press-Dispatch PCMS softball PCMS Spring Sports Teams finishes year undefeated By Mike Johansen The Pike Central Middle School Lady Chargers softball team has completed a very impressive season with a 12-0 record for the varsity team and B Team a 9-1 mark for 2013. The Lady Chargers opened the season beating Washington 17-1 in the A Team game and 7-0 for the B Team. The second game was much closer with the A Team surviving against North Daviess 8-5 while the B Team posted a 7-1 victory. The Lady Chargers downed Forest Park 14-1 in the opening game and the B Team had a 13-0 shutout. There was only an A Team game against South Knox and it was another close affair with Pike Central prevailing 3-1. The Lady Chargers hosted North Daviess and picked up a 10-1 win in the A Game and the B Team took a 5-1 decision. The PCMS crew had another close game against Heritage Hills prevailed 3-1 while the B Team picked up a 9-2 win. The Pike Central crew met the always tough Jasper Wildcats and wiped away the A Team 15-0. However, the B Team suffered its only setback by a 0-10 score. The Lady Chargers toppled Southridge 12-0 in the next game and the B Team rebounded for a 5-1 win. The closest game of the year for the A Team was a home win over Heritage Hills by a 1-0 score. The B Team had a 6-0 win that night. Pike Central pulled out a win over Vincennes by a 7-4 count while the B Team won 6-0. Pike Central blitzed Tell City 21-0 in a varsity only game. The Lady Chargers closed the season downing South Knox 13-0 in the A Team game and 12-0 in the B Team game. The coaches said the eighth grade class completed a very impressive feat as they did not lose an A Team game their entire middle school career. The Lady Chargers also had eight Academic Award winners, girls with all As for the semester. They include: Jordan Montgomery, Peyton Sorgius, Sydney Brooks, Alexis Halbrader, Emily Carnahan, Jolene Whitehead. Audra Stone and Jalah Barnes. Other team members include: Madison Sisk, Alex Traylor, Shelbi Pipes, Madison Scott, Hannah Yager, Hannah Carnahan, Allesha Sisk, Skylar Willis, Michaela Greener, Demi Croak, Kyla Newkirk, Alyssa Lee. Cailey Furman, and Alexis McDowell. The coaches include Terry Stone, Adrienne Runyan and Trent Stone. PC girls fall to Jasper By Mike Johansen The Pike Central Lady Chargers had a tough finish to the girls tennis season suffering a 5-0 loss to the Jasper Lady Wildcats in the first round of the Jasper Sectional last Wednesday. Coach Lisa Hohler said she was proud of her girls for giving a good effort and for having a pretty good season in 2013. Emily Howes lost to Abby Rogers in the No. 1 singles match 1-6, 1-6. In the No. 2 singles match Hope Waltz lost to Maria Lueken 0-6, 1-6. In the No. 3 singles match Chloe Keepes lost to Anna Fleck 0-6, 1-6. In the doubles competition Kenna Longabaugh and Kerrsten Miller fell to Ashley Rogers and Elizabeth Theil 1-6, 0-6. In the No. 2 doubles match Cayla Mahoney and Aspen Childress lost to McKenzie Helsmeyer and Brooke Lueken 2-6. 2-6. PCMS Chargers baseball team The Pike Central Middle School Chargers baseball team has had a good season. Volleyball Camp in June By Mike Johansen Girls in fourth through eighth grade will have a chance to learn about volleyball and improve the skills they already have in the Pike Central Girls Volleyball Camp June 17-20. New (returning) Pike Central Head Volleyball Coach Tonya Walton will be conducting two camps in June for girls to learn more about the sport of volleyball and to improve their personal skills. The PCHS Volleyball Camp will be at the Pike Central High School Gym June 17 through June 20. Incoming elementary students entering fourth, fifth and sixth grades will have camp from 8 to 10 a.m. each day and incoming seventh and eighth graders will have camp from 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. The cost is $20 per girl and includes a T-shirt. Boys' basketball camp By Mike Johansen Two sessions for the Pike Central High School Boys Basketball Camp will be coming up this summer for third through sixth grade and seventh through ninth grade, according to Boys Head Coach John Mokris. The Charger Summer Basketball Camp will take place in the Petersburg Elementary School Gymnasium the first two weeks in June. The first week is June 3, 4, 5, and 6 and the second week is June 10, 11, 12 and 13, Monday through Thursday of each week. The camp for the younger players will be from 9 a.m. to 10:20 a.m. each day. The camp for seventh through ninth grade will be June 3, 4, 5, 6; June 10, 11, 12, 13; and June 17, 18 and 19. It will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon each day in the PESl gym. The Charger Summer Basketball Camp is designed to assist and enhance basketball fundamentals. The camp will focus on the fundamentals of dribbling, passing, shooting, ball handling, team strategies and defense. Cost of the camp is $25. Each participant will receive a T-shirt and be eligible to compete in skill competitions for prizes. PC Football camp coming PC soccer camps in June Kids will get a chance to learn about football at the Pike Central High School Football Camp at the end of May as the PCHS Football Camp dates have been set. It is for kids in grades one through six is to be held Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, May 29, 30 and 31, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. each day. The cost is $25 and includes a T-shirt ($10 for each additional child in the same family). Any other equipment is provided. They will learn about stances and positions; formations for offense and defense; fundamentals for blocking, taking on blocks, pass routes, defending the pass and more. They will have offensive and defensive drills. Forms are available from the football coach and in school offices. They need to include the child's or children's names, grade, telephone, e-mail (if available), address, T-shirt size and parents-guardians names. Forms or enrollment information, including T-shirt size, can be sent, with payment, to Dustin Powell, Pike Central High School, 1810 E. State Road 56, Petersburg. Late registration is $30 per individual through the first day of camp. By Mike Johansen Boys and girls in the middle school age group wanting to learn more about soccer will have that chance this summer in the Pike Central Soccer Camp on June 14. The camp is being held to support the middle school and high school soccer programs and it will take place on Friday, June 14. The first session is for boys and girls going into grades kindergarten through fifth grade and it will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on June 14. The second camp is for boys and girls going into grades six through eight and it will be from 1 to 4:30 p.m., Both camps will be at the soccer field behind Old Petersburg Gym on Walnut Street in Petersburg. The cost for the camp is $20 for the first child in a family and $15 for each additional child from the same family (brothers or sisters). The cost includes a camp T-shirt if registered by May 28. Checks should be made payable to the Pike Central soccer and can be sent along with registration information including shirt size to: Pike County Youth Soccer, in care of Soccer Camp, P.O. Box 225, Otwell, IN, 47564. Please include payment, names and grades the child will go into and shirt size with registration. There will be awards given out for certain drills and competition at the camp.
