The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, September 23, 2020 B-9 Presbyterian Wesleyan alized world in murder, rape and violent crime. We may try to cut our- selves loose from the mor- al teachings of the Bible but it will never solve our prob- lems or relieve our guilt. We must return to basic family values and a belief and trust in God. Our nation is under attack from liberal, social- ist, corrupt politicians who talk religion but deny all it teaches in their private lives. These leaders have little re- spect for God and their goal is a socialistic nation void of our American heritage and belief in God. I have been to many countries where so- cialism rules and I saw their churches dying and selfish- ness and anti-God govern- ment. Our nation is under attack from within and good people must wake up now. The great American exper- iment of democracy and re- ligious freedom could be- come history. I have writ- ten this column every week since 1976. I have been a stu- dent of our changing culture, polls and trends. Our coun- try, church, and values are in decline. VIEWPOINT Continued from page 7 RAMBLINGS Continued from page 7 Nazarene Nazarene Pentecostal Church Note Deadline 10 .m. Tuesday Methodist page Independent Lutheran Continued in next column surely would love to be able to share our music with them. It sounds like a vain thing, but being welcomed by them means a lot to us. It is also a chance for me to see my sister, who is a resi- dent at Amber Manor. I didn't visit with her when the vis- its were going on because I didn't want her to get upset with how you had to conduct your visit. She seems to have adjusted well and I don't want to cause her any upset. That is all I have to share with you this week. May- be next week will be a more eventful week. As always, never give up on being a blessing whenev- er you can and try to make someone's day brighter by showing them a little kind- ness. JESUS CHRIST OUR FIRM FOUNDATION 1415 N. Vincennes Ave. Petersburg 812-354-4424 or 812-582-0240 Sunday morning fellowship 10 a.m.; Church at 10 :30 a.m.; Bible studies: Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. at Brian Eilert's house and Thursday night at 7 p.m. at church. "Blessed is the man whose strength is in You, whose heart is set on pilgrimage" (Psalms 84:5). Strength is more than phys- ical ability. It is also dependent on the mind and will. Mental strength is absolutely neces- sary for our spiritual walk. This passage in the psalms calls that walk a pilgrimage, because of the hardships and newness of the experiences and trials we each will face as part of the journey. Our pilgrimage through this life helps us to shed those things that aren't good for us, while gaining the characteris- tics that the Lord Himself ad- mires. I noticed that the pas- sage of scripture says we are blessed for setting our hearts to make the pilgrimage, not by our ability to walk it without error. I'm thankful that God is more gladdened by the ef- fort than He might be disap- pointed by our failures. He has offered us help through it, for it is His strength and endur- ance that is the blessing we need and are offered. SR 56 Bowman 812-582-8896 Sunday worship 9 a.m.; Sunday school 10 :15 a.m. We are exploring the words in Philippians 4:4- 9 and how they can help us thrive in chaos. So many trials come into our lives and along with the business of life. These things can easily choke out the Life of God in us. But praise God, "But seek ye first the King- dom of God, and His righ- teousness; and all these things will be added unto you" (Matthew 6:33). What things will be add- ed? God's order back into our lives—a peace that pass- es all understanding—He is in control. Facebook: White River Chapel UMC, Jeff Pinney. Joe Decker, Pastor Have you passed that bak- ery window and so wanted to get that eclair but knew that it wasn't good for your diet? Or have you thought a new out- fit would be great for vacation, but the money wasn't in the budget? We are all tempted by something as we go through our walk on this earth. Our Savior, Jesus Christ, also walked this earth and as a man, just like us, was tempted. Join us Sunday as Pastor Steve continues his series, "Prepar- ing the Way—Jesus is Tempt- ed" from Luke 4. Steven Hamilton, Pastor HOUSE OF MERCY CHURCH Corner of East and Porter Winslow Pastor 812-789-5229 A Church with open arms and a loving heart. Sunday morning service 10 :15 a.m.; Sunday school at 11 a.m.; We will be starting Thursday night services at 7 p.m. on October 1. On September 26, there will be a march in Washing- ton, D.C. called "The Return." It is a call to the body of Christ and America to return to God. All that we see now could be a forewarning of the judgment of God to come on America. We at House of Mercy have called a two-day fast. Fri- day, Sept. 25 and Saturday, Sept. 26, for protection of the marchers and for a self-exam- ination of our walk with God. I ask that all churches be in much prayer and even fasting for this march and their own lives. We definitely need a re- turn to God and the principles of the Word of God. Keep our president, vice-president and the cab- inet in your prayers that the right decisions will be made. Remember those in hospi- tals and nursing homes, who are in a place of no family or friends coming to visit. Also pray for families, your friends and neighbors that do not know Jesus as their Lord and Saviour, and for reviv- al fire to begin to burn fresh and anew. In His Service, George Bruce, Jr., Pastor MAIN STREET PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 10th and Main Streets, Petersburg 812-354-6844 Sunday worship 10 :30 a.m. Come visit us, our doors are always open to you. The present moment is al- ways full of infinite treasure. It contains far more than you can possibly grasp. Faith is the measure of its riches: what you find in the pres- ent moment is according to the measure of your faith. Love also is the measure: the more the heart loves, the more it rejoices in what God provides. The will of God presents itself at each moment, like an immense ocean that the desire of your heart cannot empty; yet you will drink from that ocean according to your faith and love. Office hours: 9 a.m.-noon, Monday-Friday. Amy Melhiser, Secretary OTWELL WESLEYAN CHURCH 2277 N. Mechanics Street Otwell Pastor 812-354-3028 Praise and worship service 9 a.m.; Sunday school at 9:30 a.m. morning worship at 10 :30 a.m. and evening worship at 6:30 p.m. Why does God allow trials? Why does God allow Chris- tians to go through trials and testing? Things are going along wonderfully. Sudden- ly, without warning (or so it would seem), one problem af- ter another comes tumbling into our lives. Things are look- ing bleak. Then the clouds part and the sun shines again. Everything is better. Why do we go through those hard times? Why do we go through those emotional lows? Why do we go through those days of difficulty? Why do these things happen to us? These are questions that we all ask. The Bible says: God al- lows trials in our lives so we will grow up spiritually. God allows tests in our lives and rarely announces them ahead of time. He just lays them on us. Effectively, the Lord is say- ing, "You say you know this material. Let's test you and see how well you are doing." Trials take us from the realm of theory to reality so we can start living out our faith in the real world. Trials make us strong. God allows trials in our lives, but even when things are bleak, all things work together for your good and God's glory. God is in control of all circumstances that sur- round the believer. Romans 8:28 says, "All things work to- gether for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His pur- pose" (NK JV ). Whatever you are going to face, God will give you what you need when you need it, so don't panic. God is in control. He is going to work it out for His good. If anyone has a need, you can call the pastor at 812-354- 3028. Roy Stilwell, Pastor Pam Lemond, Reporter
