Stam See VIEWPOINT on 3 In the past 25 years many evangelical pas- tors, in order to remain relevant, have tried many new things. They have redesigned the church to not look like a traditional church. It may look like an abandoned warehouse or outdated mall. Inside jumbo screens display what appears to be music videos. There is mood lighting, music with throbbing bass and young people wearing skinny jeans and tank tops. When these new things win the lost then I am grateful. Among this change we have the emerging church, mega-church, hipster church and no name church. Hipster Christianity is a rebel- lion against the subculture that bore it. The emerging church writes its own theolo- gy and embraces uni- versalism. These new churches have little in common with groups like Focus on the Fam- ily, Campus Crusade or a Billy Graham type Crusade. They have lit- tle interest in soul win- ning and prefer to be called "Christ Followers" rather than Chris- tians. They cringe at the thought of an altar In Chapter 3 of St. Paul's letter to the Ro- mans he declares that God has set forth Christ as a satisfaction for man's sin and that redemption is obtained by faith in "His blood," or His payment for sin at Calvary, en- tirely apart from works, religious or other- wise (Rom. 3:21-26). But in this same passage he states that this "remission" concerns the "sins that are past" ( Ver. 25). What does he mean by this? Some have taught from this verse that when a sinner turns to God for salvation all his sins are forgiven up to that time and now that he is saved he is henceforth responsible for himself. But this would mean that God saves men by His grace only to turn them over again to their own weak and sinful natures. If this were the case, the converted sinner would be lost again the same day, for what Christian believer is wholly free from sin? Paul rather looks back here at past ag- es and declares that we now know and pro- claim that men like Abel, Noah and Abra- ham, and also like Moses, David and Dan- iel (who lived under the Law) were actually saved by the redemption wrought by Christ, although Christ's death was still future in their day. In other words, Christ died, not only for the sins which we have committed, but also for the "sins which are past." The believers of past ages simply believed what Hey, hope everyone is well and happy as pos- sible this week. We have no reason to complain about having to water the plants these last cou- ple of days. Seems like the weather just gives everything all at once and doesn't hold much back for later. I suppose that's why we live in Indiana because if you don't like the weather now just wait it'll change. We should be thank- ful we don't get as much wind as some other places around us. Shout this week is to Phil Sisk and his family. Phil worked quite a bit on the control boards but you would often see him working as an auxilia- ry, which means he would be out turning valves and taking readings. Phil was a Viet Nam vet and was a bit edgy around sudden movements and noises which made him a target to have fun with, only it wasn't much fun for him. One day we were talking and he mentioned how he had always volunteered to walk point when his unit would be on a march through the jungle. He vol- unteered because he had more experience. He said that was how he became so edgy around the things which others saw as funny. I never tormented him again with that kind of fun, but we often faced off with the rooster move and I'm sure if Phil reads this he'll get a kick out of it. Prayers and blessings for Phil and his fami- ly are being sent up to our Lord.
