A Different Kind of Pride
The current pandemic wreaking havoc on
the world has wrought many changes in our
behaviour and how we interact with our fel-
low humans. Unfortunately, large gatherings
of people are a "no, no," which includes our
abundant pride celebrations that begin in the
month of June, and continue throughout the
remainder of the year.
While traditional pride celebrations involving
large gatherings of celebrants are being can-
celled, many are being replaced with virtual
celebrations of our queer heritage. You should
check with your local pride organizers about
what they are planning to do in lieu of physcial
pride events.
Here are just a few events that are planned
which pride celebrants can tap into virtually, if
they wish:
Pride 2020 Dragfest: 100 drag performers will
be featured during a three-day digital festival
(June 19-21) to raise money for drag artists.
Beyond The Shelter: A June 4 Pride kick-off
party hosted by New Alternatives, an organi-
zation that aids LGBTQ+ homeless youth in
transitioning out of the shelter system.
NYC Pride: New York City, home of the coun-
try's largest Pride celebration, will still cel-
ebrate Pride the last Sunday in Juneābut this
year, it'll be on-air. A virtual event will be held
on June 28, and broadcast on WABC Chan-
nel 7, abc7ny.com, and on the ABC News Live
streaming channel.
Global Pride: Pride organizations around
the world will come together on June 27th for
Global Pride 2020, a 24-hour live-streamed
event. Lineup to be announced in early June.
