Stam Awakening needed Religious Viewpoint By Clyde Dupin See MINUTES on 3 See R AMBLINGS on 3 Continued on page 2 Continued in next column In I Thes. 1:10, the Apostle Paul, by di- vine inspiration, assures believers that the Lord Jesus Christ has "delivered us from the wrath to come." He refers, of course, to deliverance from the penalty of sin. But in other passages he declares that we are al- so delivered from the power of sin. In Col. 1:12,13, for example, he gives thanks to God "Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness and hath trans- lated us into the kingdom of His dear Son." This deliverance, and the glory of our heavenly position and blessings in Christ, we may enjoy experientially now, by grace. Rom. 6:14 says: "For sin shall not have do- minion over you, for ye are not under the law but under grace." This does not mean that it is not possible for the believer to sin, but rather that it is possible, in any situa- tion, not to sin. Thus the same passage in Romans goes on to say that we should not yield ourselves as servants to sin, but to God, who, in grace has broken sin's pow- er over us. Finally, the believer in Christ will one day be delivered even from the presence of sin, for at our Lord's coming for us "we shall all be changed" (I Cor. 15:51). Be- lievers should long for Christ's coming Baptist Baptist Today, we have a moral and spiritual cri- sis in our nation. Distrust and dishonesty is at an all time high in government. We see a lack of respect for our President. Even church people repeat lies that disrespect our nation. With the Covid-19 plague, we need love, unity, and respect as never be- fore. Churches are abandoning the abso- lutes and life-changing power of the Gos- pel. Will America be able to survive this COV- ID-19 and the economic crisis? Will Ameri- ca become a secular government-run coun- try like many European countries? Can we expect honesty and truthfulness from our Congress? The an- swer to these ques- tions gives us cause for concern. In this difficult pe- riod America needs a spiritual rebirth. This will only come when America re- turns to our Consti- tution and pastors speak the truth and challenge people to let their walk match their religious talk. Millions of church-go- ing people look to their clergy for direction I don't know how many of my friends I'll end up mentioning in my column, but there are still a few who will end up here. This week I would like to say something about Bill Guy or as he was sometimes called Billy Guyguyguy. I'll never forget as Bill would call me Lowell, by God Elijah's little boy. My dad's by words were by God and that's how Bill came to call me that. Well one day my dad was going through IPL with me looking things over and when we got to unit one control room Bill hollered out "there's Lowell, by God Elijah's boy." I said, "Yes and here's by God Elijah with him." It was a funny moment and has stayed in my mind as good memory of both of them. It is fun to sometimes just to think of your friends and their impact on you. When Jesus Christ was on the Cross, His blood was draining the life from His body. He knew what it was like to be alone and wracked with pain. But Jesus' pain was far more than just phys- ical pain, for He was suffer- ing God's judgment on all the sins of the ages, the great- est darkness of the soul ev- er known. As the divine Son of God, He was perfect and without sin. But all our sins were placed on Him, and He took the judgment and Hell we alone deserve. He died in our place. Why did Jesus suffer? For you. Why did Jesus suffer? Be- cause God loves us. Because God loves you, and Christ willingly went to the Cross for you. There was no oth- er way for sin's penalty to be paid, for us to be redeemed.
