The Patoka River was well over floodstage this week. The White River was at 23.1 on Tuesday and expected to crest at 23.4 feet on Thursday. Floodstage at Petersburg is 16 feet. Highway 257 has been closed since last week. near. "I have enough materi- al for about eight more, but then I will be out of elastic," said Biddell. She said the pattern looks pretty simple, but there are a lot of steps to it. "It is some- thing that is needed and I had material and time to do it. I'm glad to do my part," said Biddle. "I just started this week" said Peggy Cappozella. She has made four so far and ran out of elastic. "It takes me a while. They are really sturdy, that is the best part of them. You can wash and wash them and they will hold up." Cappozella said when Benjamin called her about the project, she was glad to join in. "I said 'sure, I would be glad to help. We can try to get some of them out there.' You wouldn't believe some of these little old ladies around here. Some of them are real go getters." Jeff Jones, director of Marketing and Public Re- lations of Gibson General Hospital, said the contribu- tion of masks is greatly ap- preciated. He said Deaconess Hospi- tal in Evansville first put out the call for masks and the re- sponse has been worldwide. "Regionally, we have been getting calls and emails from people asking how they can help," said Jones. He said it took them a cou- ple of days to put together a process to accept the masks and sterilize them, so they are just now starting to get the masks. Jones said they had a sup- ply of masks on hand, but it is hard to order more masks because every hospital in world is trying to get them. "This is huge. Anything we can get from the commu- nity is huge. . . It is definitely appreciated. The response is amazing," said Jones. Highway 257 bridge projects begin on March 30 Highway 257 will have two lane closures as crews work on bridge projects starting Monday, March 30. The Indiana Depart- ment of Transportation an- nounced the lane closures on State Road 257 in Pike County due to weather-re- lated project complications. Earlier this month, IN- DOT Contractors began working on the bridge spanning the White River on SR 257, between Wash- ington and Otwell. Due to heavy rains and flooding, this project has temporari- ly halted until the flood wa- ters recede. Because of this, two more bridge projects associat- ed with this project will be moved up in the project time- line. Beginning on or around Monday, March 30, contrac- tors will close one lane of the SR 257 bridge spanning Flat Creek near Velpen and the SR 257 bridge spanning the Patoka River near Pikeville. Work will be going on simul- taneously on each bridge as crews work to patch and re- pave. Work is expected to last until the end of April, de- pending upon weather con- ditions. During the project, one lane will remain open at all times. Traffic will be controlled by a temporary signal. The lane closures will be in place around the clock. INDOT urges drivers to slow down and stay alert near crews. Driver arrested for OVWI after crash By James Capozella Travis Glen Franklin, 25, of 525 E. State St., Prince- ton, was arrested for OV WI last week after he was found lying in the driver's seat of a vehicle that was down an embankment at the I-69/SR 61 interchange. Pike Coun- ty Deputies Buck Seger and Paul Collier were dispatched to the interchange, where Franklin's vehicle had slid down an embankment late Wednesday evening. Deputy Seger reports that Franklin was in possession of the keys with the lights on and no other individuals around. A fter asking Frank- lin to exit the vehicle, Seger immediately smelled the odor of an alcoholic bever- age coming from Franklin's breath, and also observed bloodshot eyes and slurred speech. When asked how much alcohol he had consumed, Franklin stated, "not very much," according to the re- port. He then stated a few shots of schnapps, but only a little before driving. Asked why he did not call to report the accident, Franklin said he was going to have his girlfriend take him home. He said he had been wait- ing about 30 minutes. According to the report, Franklin failed field sobrie- ty tests and tested .13 on the PBT sample. He was trans- ported to the Pike County Jail, where he had a breath alcohol level of .141. Frank- lin was overheard stating he knew he shouldn't have been drinking and had made a mistake, according to Seger's report.
