Send the details to editor@sgstartimes.com THIS WEEK Writing a More Effective Press Release Workshop A Chamber of Commerce workshop will discuss how to write more effective press releases to benefit your non- profits and small businesses from noon to 1 p.m. Feb. 18. The Lunch and Learn will provide participants with tips to improve their press releases when communicat- ing with the media and will be hosted by South Gibson Star-Times Editor Janice Barniak. A light lunch will be served. Cost is free to members and $5 for non-members. Merit Board meets The Gibson County Sheriff's Office Merit Board will have an executive session to review employees at noon Feb. 18, with the regular meeting at 12:30 p.m. at Gibson County Sheriff's Office Community Corrections Train- ing Room, at 112 E. Emerson Street, Princeton. Beekeepers meetings set Beekeepers of Southwest Indiana will meet at 6 p.m. on the third Thursday of every month at the Vincennes University Center–Fort Branch campus, 8100 South U.S. Hwy. 41 Fort Branch. Local Emergency Planning Committee meets The Gibson County Local Emergency Planning Com- mittee (LEPC) will hold its meetings for 2020 in the Main Conference Room at the Gibson County Annex North; 225 N. Hart St., Princeton. Meetings will be held, tentatively, Feb. 20, May 21, Aug. 20 and Nov. 19. Meeting times are scheduled for 10 a.m. central time but may change with notice, and are open to the public. NAMA hosts February pull National Antique Machinery Tractor Pull plans their winter quarter finals in the Gibson County Fairgrounds Pavilion Feb. 21-22. Free admission. Daughters plan spaghetti supper Daughters of Isabella in Haubstadt will serve a spa- ghetti supper with homemade sauce, salad, applesauce and desserts for $ 8 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 22 at the Haubstadt Knights of Columbus. Bayou benefit returns Bonnie's Bayou Benefit is set for 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Feb. 23 at R'z Cafe and Catering in Fort Branch. Haubstadt Knight of St. John Chicken Dinner The Haubstadt Knight of St. John will have their next fundraiser chicken dinner beginning at 10 :30 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 23 at the Knights of St. John Hall on Main Street in Haubstadt. Dine-in or carry-out meals are avail- able. Purdue Extension Office announces upcoming area agricultural and natural resource events From now until Monday, March 2, there will be a Farm Winter Workshop Series at Gibson Southern High School. The meetings are from 7 to 9 p.m. at Gibson Southern. Topics in the series are: Management of Nox- ious and Invasive Weeds on Feb. 24; and Topic TBA on March 2. THIS MONTH VFW announces monthly events All shoots for the VFW in February have been can- celled. Auxiliary Breakfast from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Satur- day, March 14. Carry-outs available. Treasure Hunt is at 7 p.m. every Thursday. Open to public, tickets can be purchased anytime at VFW can- teen. The kitchen will be open from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thurs- day. VFW Auxiliary Post #2714 will have a Mardi Gras par- ty on Saturday, Feb. 29. Featuring Rodney Watts from 7:30 to 10 :30 p.m. Dinners will be served from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Menu includes a crawfish platter, jambalaya, gumbo, red beans and rice, fried shrimp platter, burg- ers and fries too. AARP Foundation Tax Aide Schedule A ARP Foundation Tax-Aide will have IRS certified volunteer preparers available to prepare and electroni- cally file federal and state tax returns for low-moderate income taxpayers, with special emphasis on those over age 55. You need not be a member o A ARP to participate. You may sign up at the site when we are present for any day there is an opening. We recommend that those with investment income sign up mid-March or later. If re- turns require amendment, they will be done later March or early April. Gibson County sites are Oakland City Library (Mon- days except Feb. 17), Fort Branch Fire Department (sec- ond and fourth Tuesday plus April 7), and Gibson County Senior Center (Thursdays). All sites will operate from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. beginning Feb. 6 and continuing through April 10. Polar Plunge at Prides Creek Special Olympics plans a Polar Plunge at noon Feb. 29 at Prides Creek in Petersburg. Beadle Bunch plans fundraiser The Beadle Bunch Relay for Life team's annual Soup Supper Fundraiser will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Feb. 29 at the Princeton Community Middle School cafeteria. The menu includes chili, vegetable and potato soup, chicken salad, ham salad, cheese spread and peanut butter sand- wiches, hotdogs, dessert and drink. All proceeds donated to Relay for Life of Gibson County. Mardi Gras Jazz Gala set, deadline Feb. 28 Mardi Gras Jazz Gala is set for March 14 at the Toyo- ta Events Center. Hosted by the Gibson General Health Foundation as a hospital fundraiser, RSVPs are due by Feb. 28. Dress is masquerade or cocktail, and the Bob Ballard Trio will play. Catered by Bauerhaus, there will be live and silent auctions, a raffle and hors d'oeuvres. Seating is limited. Princeton Presbyterian Church community dinner Princeton Presbyterian Church will host a free com- munity dinner from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. the third Saturday of each month at the corner of State and Princeton St. The events are open to the public. South Gibson Kindergarten Registration Kindergarten registration at Owensville Community School will be from 8:30 to 11 a.m., 12:30 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 10. Kindergarten registra- tion at Haubstadt Community School will be from 8:30 to 11 a.m., 12:30 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 on Thursday, March 19. Kindergarten registration at Fort Branch Communi- ty School will be from 8:30 to 11 a.m. 12 to 3 p.m. on Fri- day, Apr. 17 and from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 21. Students age 5 years or older, on or before August 1, 2020, are eligible to register. Parents or guardians must bring a copy of your child's current immunizations and a certified birth certificate. Each student must be pres- ent at registration and will be given a readiness assess- ment during registration. A birth certificate is required and can be received from the health department in the county of birth (Gib- son County 812-385 -3831, Vanderburgh 812-435 -2400 and Warrick 812-897-6105). There is a fee charged for each copy and may be requested by mail if the fee is en- closed. A copy of the certified birth certificate is made and placed in the student's permanent school record. Shooting for scholarships The third annual gun raffle and soup meal will be sponsored by American Legion Post 51 and Transcen- dent Health Care Saturday, March 14 at Owensville Com- munity Activities Building at 302 E. Warrick St. Chili or vegetable soup and sandwich, dessert and drink will cost $5 with carry-out soup at $12 per gal- lon. The raffle drawing is planned for 1 p.m., with the following a Henry Golden Boy .22 calibre rifle, a Smith and Wesson MP-2 9 mm piston, Ruger LCP .380 pistol. Tickets are $5 each; six for $20. All proceeds go to their scholarship fund. Gibson County Farm Service announces deadline The Gibson County Farm Service Agency would like to announce that March 15 is the deadline to elect a pro- gram and enroll a farm into the Agriculture Risk Cov- erage and Price Loss Coverage Program for the 2019 crop year. Farm Bureau Ag Day/Legislative Forum March 21 A legislative forum will be March 21 in conjunction with Farm Bureau's Ag Day Breakfast at the Knights of Columbus in Princeton. DOWN THE ROAD Deer camp planned Whitetails Unlimited plans a Southwest Indiana Deer Camp April 11 in the 4-H Exhibit Hall at the Gibson County Fairgrounds. Cost is $40. Quarter horses ride again Indiana Kentucky Illinois Interstate Quarter Horse Association is planning a free show at the Gibson County Fairgrounds, May 8 -9. For more information, go to gib- soncountyfair.com. Relay set for June Gibson County Relay for Life is set for June 6 at the Gibson County Fairgrounds. The event is free but raises donations for the American Cancer Association. Class of 1991 plans reunion The Gibson Southern Class of 1991 is now planning their first ever class reunion. It will be held on Friday, June 18, 2021, at the Haubstadt Community Park. A Pay- Pal account has been set up to raise funds for the event. HYAT T Argiree L. Hyatt, 94, of Newburgh, formerly of Haubstadt, passed away Thursday, February 6, 2020, at Hamilton Pointe Health and Rehab in Newburgh. She was born to James and Senie (Bryant) O'Rear on August 16, 1925, in Em- ory, Texas. She worked for Douglass Aircraft during W WII and Emge Packing Company in Ft. Branch. She is survived by her son, Roger (Melinda "Bod- ie") Hyatt, of Newburgh; and several nieces and neph- ews. Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Sidney "Jack" Hyatt, in 2007; brothers, Edward Lee, Charles Alvin and James Curtis O'Rear; and sisters, Katie Pearl Cantrell, Betty Louise Baker and Martha Helen Tidwell. Private services were on Tuesday, February 11, 2020, at the Werry Funeral Home in Poseyville, with burial in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Griffin. Memorial contributions may be made to: Mt. LILLIAN MA XINE CURL Lillian Maxine Curl, 89, of Owensville, went to be with the Lord Feb. 9, 2020, at Lin- da White Hospice House in Evansville, surrounded by her family. She was born Jan. 3, 1931, in Sumner, Ill., to James Earl Farrar and Maude Irene Wirth. She married the love of her life, Kenneth Curl, and was blessed with five chil- dren. She was a proud farm- er's wife and homemak- er. She enjoyed driving the tractor, running parts and helping around the farm. She loved listening to gos- pel hymns, working puzzle books and shopping. She was known to be a great bargain shopper and loved to save a penny; some people also knew her to be a garage sale queen. She loved to talk to people, she never met a stranger. She was a dedicat- ed wife, mother and grand- mother. She was a member of Maumee General Baptist Church. She is survived by her children, Lynn (Ellen) Curl, J. (Karen) Curl, Jenny (Steve) Schmuck and Con- nie Curl; daughter-in-law, Sue Curl; siblings, Darrell Farrar and Katherine Mont- gomery; 12 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; hus- band; son, Allen Curl; sib- lings, Harold Farrar, Em- ma Faye Hale, Darwin Far- rar and two infant siblings; and great-grandson, Jona- thon Jones. The funeral was at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2020, at Maumee General Baptist Church, with Kevin Miley and Ken Nelson officiating. Interment followed at Mau- mee Cemetery.
