Poplar Street, Petersburg largest service organization and there are clubs in many other countries where people pay big dues just to be a Lion and there are actually waiting lists. So we are extremely blessed to be able to just say, "yes, I want to help." Our old cat has either gotten out and run off or has hidden in the house, because while she has improved we are hoping she hasn't crawled off and hid somewhere. If something happened to the old cat I will not have another one in the house. You get attached to your animals and if you are a softy like me it can break your heart. you can spend a lot of money keeping a pet up to date on shots and flea and tick medicine. Have you ever noticed the difference be- tween a fluorescent light and an LED fix- ture. In our garage we have incandescent fixtures and today we hung a one bulb fix- ture in there and it was as bright as all three other lights burning at once. The guys I help at the Christmas in the Park say they are cheaper to operate and last a lot longer. I hope this one works out for us. We will be having a Lions memorial for our friend and fellow Lion Arvel Wade at the Winslow Nazarene church between 1 and 2 p.m. This involves the presentation of white carnations to family members as LIONS is spelled out and explained. Our lo- cal clubs share a sixth carnation to repre- sent our friendship with the fallen member. It is quite a touching service and displays much respect for Lion and family. Our Dis- trict Governor expects to be at the service and may lead the readings. Well my wife and I had a day off from bab- ysitting and the house seems deserted with no noises and toys flying around on the floor. From Monday to Saturday our house resem- bles a day care center. I do miss the kids be- cause we waited so long for them but I do Every student of the Word should know the three brutal murders around which all history revolves. These three murders represent Is- rael's response to God's three-fold call to re- pentance. They explain the unpardonable sin and form the background for the present dis- pensation of grace. It was John the Baptist, the last of the Old Testament prophets, who was sent as the fore- runner of Christ to call Israel to repentance. He was beheaded by Herod, the wicked and li- centious "king of the Jews". A fter John, Christ Himself took up the cry: "Repent, for the King- dom of Heaven is at hand". Him they crucified. Then, at Pentecost, Israel was given a third opportunity to repent, until they shed blood again, stoning Stephen to death. It should be noticed, too, that their guilt, as well as their bitter enmity, increased with the second and third murders! Had Israel, re- sponded to John's call to repentance Herod would never have dared to even put John in jail. This explains why our Lord did nothing to release him from prison, even though this had offended John. It was not His, but theirs to do something about John's unjust impris- onment and every moment he spent in prison testified against them. Read carefully Luke 3:18 -20 ; 7:19 -29; and Matthew 14:1-11. As to the beheading of John the Baptist, they per- mitted it. As to the crucifixion of Christ, they demanded it (Luke23:23,24). As to the ston- ing of Stephen, they committed it, casting him out of the city with their own hands and ston- ing him there. And so that generation in Israel committed the unpardonable sin which our Lord warned would not be forgiven, either in that age, or in the age to come. Thus we close this article by quoting those precious passages from Paul's epistles which clearly DENY the possibility of any "unpardonable sin" during the present "dispensation of the grace of God": "We have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace" (Eph.1:7). "Moreover the law entered, that the of- fence might abound. But where sin abound- ed, grace did much more abound: that as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord" (Rom.5:20,21). Stam The Christian's secret weapon Religious Viewpoint by Clyde Dupin "The prayer of a righteous man is pow- erful and effective" ( James 5:16). These words remind us of the power of prayer. Ma- ny people from all faiths and walks of life find prayer to be helpful in time of need. It can lift the burdens of life and bring com- fort in time of grief and healing when we are sick. It is amazing that we do not use the privilege of prayer more often. At last the scientific community admits what Christians have always known. There is power in prayer. Prayer is a good medicine that brings us into friendship with God and aids in the healing process. I have a good friend who was Chief of Surgeons at his hos- pital. Before every surgery he requests the privilege to pray for the patient and success of the surgery. More and more physicians are encouraging prayer and meditation to assist in the recovery of their patients. Reg- ularly, when tragedy strikes someplace in our world reporters from one cable T V net- work often encourag- es prayer. I am sure most of our battle worn soldiers around the world pray as they face constant danger. A six-year Duke University study of 4,000 elderly people found a lower rate of death when they at- tend church. Anoth- er Duke study, of the same group, found a lower rate of blood pressure among those who pray regularly. In a world so filled with terrorism, bro- ken homes, disease and fear I encourage people to try prayer. There is one key in the verse I started this column with. It speaks of a righteous man. This means a person who believes in Jesus Christ and seeks to do the will of God. We are off and running on a new week and new adventures although there will be some bumps we will just have to maneuver around or through. The bumps in life usu- ally help us grow stronger if we allow God to help us through them. We played music at River Walk communi- ties Monday and even with all the mistakes we made, a good time was had by all. They had a good crowd out to listen to us, which always helps us because you stay more fo- cused on doing the best you can. Our grandson's schedule is back to nor- mal for awhile. He and I are back to dodging the morning traffic and school buses. He must be like his papa because he always has something to say and seems like they were all glad to see him back. Our granddaugh- ter goes there once in awhile, when we have things going on and can't watch them. They seem to love her as well at day care. I got to help unload a food truck Tuesday afternoon. They me gave the business about being part time. A retiree sometimes has a busy schedule. I'm not sorry about being busy because I feel useful and needed, that is an important thing. I have almost begged for someone to be- come burdened with the desire to help oth- ers by joining the Lions. We sing "Onward Chris- tian soldiers, marching as to war," but so often Satan mounts attacks against us and we behave as if we were prisoners of war, or worse, conscientious objectors. But as Christians, we don't have to live deferred defeat- ed lives, lives where we are constantly conquering sin. There is only one way to have victory over sin. That is to walk so closely with Christ that sin no longer dominates your life. It be- comes the exception rather than the rule. Why does a close walk with Christ make the differ-
