EIGHTH GRADE CHARGERS FALL TO TWIGS AT SOUTH GIBSON INVITATIONAL 8th grade girls are runners up at SGIT Pike Central eighth grade clos- es out their season with a 37-22 loss to Tecumseh in the South Gibson Invitational Tournament. With a David and Goliath meeting, Goliath was unfortunately victori- ous. The first quarter was quiet for Brailey Mills, as she was guarded heavily because of the 17 points she scored in the last meeting be- tween the two teams. Anna White- head stepped up, scoring two buckets, and Kelby Leighty was 1 of 2 from the free-throw line, end- ing the quarter with PC down 5 -10. In the second quarter, Pike Cen- tral got production from Mills, in- cluding a steal ending in an easy lay-up, as well as a three-pointer. Kelby Leighty had another oppor- tunity to score a bucket as well. Te- cumseh's height came into play as Pike Central was clearly at a dis- advantage. Post-play from Tecum- seh left Pike Central down 22-12 by halftime. The third quarter was quiet on offense for both teams and fouls started to plague Pike Cen- tral as Tecumseh shot 5 of 8 from the charity stripe, plus a buck- et. Kelby Leighty was Pike Cen- tral's only scorer in the third quar- ter with one bucket. Pike Central was down 14-29 going into the fi- nal quarter. The fourth quarter scoring came from Mills hitting 4 of 4 from the free-throw line, Ruby Sallee scored a bucket and Kelby Leighty also scored a goal. The game ended with Tecumseh win- ning 37-22. Mills was the leading scor- er with nine, Leighty had seven, Whitehead four and Sallee two. Coach Jenn Smith commented, "The girls did a great job, again at the free-throw line, hitting 5 of 7. The girls have always been short- er than the other teams and have fought through it. They all fight hard and give awesome effort. I thought they did a great job tak- ing time on offense and took ad- vantage of their speed when driv- ing to the basket. I was happy to see our post-play get more action. The girls did a great job feeding Kelby tonight. Scoring was more balanced tonight, with 4 of 6 girls putting points on the board.
