John Manges, Minister WINSLOW CHRISTIAN CHURCH Corner of Lafayette and Walnut Pastor 812-753-3539 Sunday school 9:30 a.m.; morning worship 10 :30 a.m.; We extend a warm wel- come to everyone. Dr. Robert Asa, Minister to get used to a lot of new things. One of them was learning my destinations. I learned there weren't a lot of signs, especially on I-69, so I started paying attention to things that marked my route, to know where I was, to judge how far I was. This became especially handy on my way home. You see, it's easy when you drive for a while to just look ahead, and loose track. You start thinking about different things, what you need to do, the people you need to see, and if you aren't paying at- tention, you might just miss where you are going. A cou- ple of times, not paying at- tention I missed the Peters- burg exit, and I was halfway to Washington. But then, I started looking for things to judge where I was. The smokestacks became espe- cially helpful. When I saw the billows of smoke rising into the air, day or night, I knew Pike County was close, my Petersburg exit was ap- proaching. The Psalmist writes this about God's word, that is scripture; "your word is a lamp for my feet, a light for my path" (119:105). We need a light for our path in this world, as the world seems darker, it's easy to lose fo- cus and miss our direction. We need to be watchful in our lives and we need to cul- tivate our relationship with the Lord through prayer and his word. Everyone welcome. "Seek peace and well-be- ing for the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf; for in its peace you will have peace" ( Jeremiah 29:7). Like the Israelites in the day of Jeremiah, we have been sent to a land of tem- porary exile until we pass in- to eternity. As believers, we are to show light to those lost in a dark world. While here, we should pray for the peace of our land and its people, and that we can be brought back into the bless- ing of the Lord by obedience to Him, spreading His love to our neighbors, no matter our differences. Remember that true peace doesn't depend on cir- cumstances, but on security in the Lord, knowing where and to whom we belong. Let us give thanks that He gives us true peace and not just for this season, but always. A school teacher asked her first graders to draw a pic- ture of something they were thankful for. She thought of how little these children from poor neighborhoods ac- tually had to be thankful for. But she knew that most of them would draw pictures of turkeys on tables with food. The teacher was taken aback with the picture little Doug- las handed in...a simple child- ishly-drawn hand. But whose hand? The class was capti- vated by the abstract image. "I think it must be the hand of God that brings us food," said one child. "A farmer," said another, "because he grows the turkeys." Finally, when the others were back at work, the teacher bent over Douglas's desk and asked whose hand it was. "It's your hand, Teacher," he mumbled. She recalled that frequent- ly at recess, she had tak- en Douglas, a scrubby, for- lorn child, by the hand. She often did that with the chil- dren, but it obviously meant a lot to Douglas. Perhaps this could be the Thanksgiving, not just to be thankful for material things given to us, but for the chance, in whatev- er small way, to reach out to those who need us the most. Happy Thanksgiving! Chad Searls, Pastor New location— 601 S. 9th Street, Petersburg (Former- ly the Wesleyan Church). Sunday study 9 -9:35 a.m.; Sunday services at 10 a.m.; No Wednesday evening ser- vice from 6:30 -8 p.m., this week; youth service Sunday from 6 -7:30 p.m. We have the power of life and death in the words we speak (Proverbs 18:21). We are children of God and He has passed onto us the ability to speak things in- to existence (Romans 4:17). When we take offense to a situation, we can rise up and start speaking negative things (death) or we can speak what the Word of God says such as 'I am in perfect peace when I keep my focus on you, Lord. You are my de- fender Lord, and I will hide in You when the enemy at- tacks. You Lord, work all things for my good because I trust You and am called ac- cording to Your purpose.' As a Christian, your super powers are your words and your ability to love (through God) those who persecute you. That's how we defeat the attacks of the enemy. No Men's Ministry until January.
