Gorby and Stone also earned Academic Awards. Petersburg family competes in Florida 5K By Dennis Marshall Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Pike Central wrestling coach Ryan Mc- Cain and his two sons, Carter, 11, and Ca- leb, 9, competed in the 2019 Wicked Triple Fun Run 5K on Saturday, Oct. 19 in Fort Walton Beach, Fla. Caleb won the 10 -year-old and under age group after finishing the race in 23 min- utes and 14 sec- onds. "We were pret- ty shocked when we heard Ca- leb won his age group," Ryan said. "We thought he might place, but we never thought he would actually win the whole thing. He was competing against a lot of kids and it was ac- tually his person- al best in a 5K." Just four run- ners under the age of 20 finished ahead of Caleb. It was the second year the McCains have run the Wicked Triple Fun Run. "It's turning into a little tradition for us," Ryan said. "People are very nice down there and they have a nice after party after the race, which is a lot of fun. So as long as we keep going down there, we will keep run- ning this race." Carter finished 189th overall with a time of 36:19 and Ryan placed 229th in 41:08. Ryan started running these types of events back in 2009; before that, he wres- tled in college. "We were always forced to run for con- ditioning," he said. "I absolutely hated it. Once we started having kids, I wanted to try to stay healthy so I actually start- ed running and found it enjoyable. When I first started, I never raced on my own. I always pushed our kid in a jogging stroller and then I transitioned to a double jogging stroller when we had two kids. We now have three boys, but as the kids have gotten old- er, they've started running on their own." Being the wrestling coach sometime re- quires Ryan to get a "little hands on" during practice. "I actually have to wrestle with the guys, so I have to somewhat stay in shape," he said. "I've enjoyed running the last 10 years not because I ever thought I was gonna win anything. I'm a big guy, so the likeli- hood of that is slim to none, but it's good for staying in shape and staying mentally tough. My knees are not in great shape any- more, so this is actually the first 5K I have just walked, which was a lot harder than I thought it would be. It was a good workout. Hopefully, I can get back to running eventu- ally, but until then, I'll just watch the boys run and walk mine." By Dennis Marshall Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net The Pike Central girls' basketball team traveled to Northeast Dubois on Thursday, Oct. 31 and defeated the Jeeps, 50 -34, in a final tuneup before the start of the reg- ular season. The teams played five 12-minute quar- ters with a running clock and free throws for the first 11 minutes of each quarter. The clock stopped and free throws were shot during the final minute of each quar- ter. "I think we played pretty solid overall," Pike Central head coach Kyle McCutchan said. "We made some nice plays and also have things to improve on and clean up." The Jeeps started strong and led 10 - 8 after the first quarter, where the team could only play man-to-man with no full court defense. "I thought we could get any type of shot we wanted and we did miss several lay ups, and took a few jump shots when we could have been more patient and got a great look," McCutchan said. "There were a lit- tle bit of nerves and anxiousness and that is to be expected." Pike Central settled in and started the quarter on an 11-0 run. The Chargers out- scored the Jeeps 23-11 in the second and led by double digits, 31-21, at halftime. The teams were permitted to play zone and switching defense in the second. The third quarter was designated for pressing. "I wanted our group to be fresher for that quarter because that has been a big point of emphasis for us and we made a few mistakes, but overall, we did a solid job against their press," McCutchan said. "We forced some turnover in our press. I was pleased with how we played for the first time out for the varsity." The Chargers' junior varsity squad came in midway through the third and finished the game. "The JV did a solid job on both ends of the floor," McCutchan said. "Offensive- ly, they got a little impatient and took the first open shot, which is typical for the first outing, but they competed on defense and shot the ball well from the perimeter once they got settled in. I was happy that we made plays in the last minute to pull out the last quarter and hit some big free throws to do it." The teams were allowed to choose their defense in the fourth. Lauren Vaughn led Pike Central with 13 points. She was followed by Kailee Mann with 11, Mallory Hickey with 10, Jayln Nel- son with six, Mallory Hunt with four and Keena Young, Kahle Young and Liberty Taylor each scored two. The Jeeps' scorers were Hadley Fuhr- man with nine, Jazlyn Sanders and Haley Rickelhoss with six each, Maddy Cave with three, and Alexus Royer, Ryland Kalb, Becca Brosmer, Regan Knies and No. 52 each had two.
