Postcard # 665 was re- ceived this week at Sweets Column, Winslow, IN 47598. It has four frames. First is the state capitol build- ing with trees and colorful flowers accenting the front steps in Montgomery. Sec- ond is the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Hunts- ville, with several rockets and the shuttle. Third is the Barber Motorsports Muse- um in Birmingham, showing several motorcycles. Fourth is the Bellingrath Gardens in Mobile that show flow- ers and trees surrounding a small stream with a walk- ing bridge. The back reads, "Hi, just spend past week in Gulf Shores, Ala. My daughter and family invited me to go on their fall break vacation. Have had wonderful weather in the 80s during the days, cools down some at night. Rainy when we left Saturday. Dorothy Reisenbeck Baker - Pikeville Gal." Loved to get postcard # 665 from "Sweet Home Al- abama" and I take it you all had a great time. Thanks again, Dorothy and family. Winslow Patoka Riv- er is almost full from the two inches or more of rain we had on Saturday, Oct. 26 with strong winds that took some of the leaves off the trees and instead of see- ing grass you saw a yard of thick leaves. In the garden spot, I have a windmill stand that was taken down to the ground from the wind and the limbs, or at least one, are trained to fall into the truck bed. When the yard was cov- ered with leaves, Norm decided to get the mower out and mulch them up, and it looked nice until the wind blew again and took more leaves to fall but not as much as before. Monday, October 28 in the early a.m. hours you couldn't see too much from the fog that the Tri-State had. Some areas, at about 9 a.m., still had a visibility of one mile. I guess you all had time to spare last week as you read the column. I thought I had turned in the column early but I didn't because I write it down in my calendar and it wasn't written in. I guess that tells me I may be getting older and keeping notes are a good thing to do, so do you have that second cup of coffee? Us "city folk" met up with our wood guy one Satur- day to get a load of differ- ent types of wood for the old wood stove to keep the cabin comfy and cozy since the fall temps feel like win- ter. We were so grateful the days were comfortable, we decided to get another load the next day with Kyana. She was our wood stacker in the truck, so in no time, we were on our way home to un- load our haul. We must have worn Kyana out, but it was great to see her again. We had stopped by to see Tim and Jeanette, where they were splitting some chunks of tree for their wood stove. So we helped and Norm made a real great deer blind by using the limbs. I know if I was hunting and didn't want to climb a tree, I would have used this one. We rescanned the T V, when the wind wasn't blow- ing, and now we have chan- nels 7-1,2,3,4; 22-1,2,3; and 44, 1,2, and as long as the wind stays calm, we can see some programs. Some of the leaves are off the trees also. I was in the new Town Hall to pay our water bill and got to view the many pictures of the Town of Winslow from a really old Main St., the Com- munity Center being built, the old schoolhouse, the grad and high schools, the covered bridge, old depot, the iron bridge and more and more pictures that were brought in for everyone to enjoy. Stop in and see if you remember the attractions Winslow had at one time. My mom is here for a vis- it until Thanksgiving and to spend her 93rd birthday handing out candy with her cousin Janice at the Corner Book Shoppe. My sister, Terri Ann, is staying sev- eral days to visit with Mom and me. So, on Halloween night, Mom and Terri Ann were taken over to Janice's by Laura, where they met up with Winnie, another cous- in, and Eva. They all had some great times as they ate birthday cupcakes and candy was given to the trick or treaters. Becky stopped by with Abigail and Mat- thew to get their treat from Great-Grandma Janice. Norm and I would like to thank Sherry Bishop, Rob- in Smith and Petersburg Hardware as they helped us with the gifts for Sweets Col- umn Halloween Yard Deco- rations. I had no idea what item was to be given out and Sherry and Robin came to the rescue. So, to the about 30 decorated yards, they got some kind of Halloween item of glow-in-the-dark bats or skeletons, headbands with pumpkins, ink pens with a fuzzy witch head, necklaces that light up and many more items that were so cute to receive. There were new families who dec- orated this year and most of Winslow was in the Hallow- een spirit. I would also like to thank Norm, who took the gift up to each one of those yards for me. To everyone who decorated for the kids and us adults, you did a great job in bringing to us the Hal- loween spirit in the Town of Winslow. While we were out, we saw some awesome cos- tumes going from door to door to get their sweet treat on a cold and windy night. I believe that it isn't Hallow- een unless it's cold and the weather didn't keep too ma- ny kids from getting out. Since the weather was bad to stand out and have their costume judged by the Winslow Lions at the Main St. parking lot, they met in the old Town Hall and I heard there was a good crowd of kids. I have no in- formation on how many or who won what prize, so that will be in next week's read- ing. I know they got some candy and everyone had a great time. The lights are about to dim on this week, but keep an eye on family and friends, slow down and see the changing colors on the trees and the animals that make their way across the road- ways, and stop for school buses. As always, smile, wave and say hi to everyone you see this week.
