There are already quite a few who have the Hal- loween spirit of fun. Winslow seniors meet on Monday and Tuesday at the Com- munity Center. Petersburg seniors meet on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday in the courthouse basement. There were no postcards in the mailbox. Winslow Patoka Riv- er is still low even though we got rain showers. We didn't get enough to make the water rise. Our temps were com- fortable in the 70s to 80s and some days were jacket weather. The nights were cold enough that the furnace and coal stoves had to be on, at least for the night times. This also means that the windows were opened again, if on- ly during the day. But last Friday morn- ing, before the sun rose, we had thun- der and lightning for a few hours that felt great as the coolness came inside the open window. More of the trees are changing to the yellow colors and some trees have changed to the red leaves, soon the fall colors will pop out everywhere. Over the weekend, October 4 and 5, was the Spurgeon Fall Festival, where it all began Friday night with the fire dept. pork chop dinner or the home- made chili, and it was all tasty. There was supposed to be a movie but there was a glitch with the projector, so no movie this year. Saturday, the auxilia- ry served breakfast of biscuits and gra- vy. The Winslow Lions served lunch of hamburgers and brats, with the New Liberty Church serving supper with several different soups. The Winslow Masons served their famous ice cream from their truck and there were two vendors selling their wares. The musi- cal groups were great all day long, play- ing all types of songs for the listening ears. There was a raffle on a 64" T V that is still going on. The winner will be drawn after all the tickets are sold, so talk to a Spurgeon firefighter. The boys' and girls' bikes have new owners to enjoy the rides or even learn to ride. Door prizes were drawn and there were a lot donated by businesses and other stars. The Halloween Costume Contest has 10 -15 children dressed up and several trunk or treats to give out those tasty treats. Oh yes, the elec- tricity was off for about 1 1/2 hours early Saturday morning, from where someone had hit a pole just south of town. We appreciate everyone for com- ing out to this fun-filled event, for all the groups who participated, and to the workers who were tired, but had a great time for this two-day event in this small town of Spurgeon. The Winslow Lions had set up the stage to be used at the Spurgeon Festival and the three or four of us Lions are getting the hang of setting up and taking down, but we are a little grateful to put the stage in storage for this year, but as for me, I had so much fun in helping out. Last Thursday morning, I woke up about 1:30 a.m. to see the electric go off. It tried to come on two times but it was dark for another two hours and when the lights came back on again, I woke up again. Later on, after Norm came home from work, he said that the whole town plus areas south of town were out of electric also. I'm glad we have clocks that are on batteries to see what the real time is. Our cabin family called the other day and they have some trees that have fallen for firewood. So, we loaded up our equipment and one load is already stocked up. Now to get the other loads. This one load was in a cow field, where the cows stood still and wondered what we were doing in their area. The little brown calf is cute, but its parents are black in color. Cows aren't the only an- imals. There were ducks, bunnies and chickens. This is the season for all the fall colors to be seen in many yards, but this is also the time were many yards have their Halloween decorations up, whether they are scary or not. Winslow started decorating their yards before October began and they have been great to see the different ways to set up for the Halloween spirit of fun for kids of all ages. We helped to show a couple of our friends how to mortar between some logs on a cabin. We showed them the way we were shown and what to use to do this work. It brought back some great feelings to me to see what goes into restoring these old logs as a home to live in and I love all the accents that are in this cabin. The lights are about to dim for this week, but keep an eye on family and friends. Since the weather is changing, don't forget to bring a jacket along with you. Slow down and enjoy your area, even the smallest areas have some- thing of wonder. Then, always smile, wave and say hi to everyone you see this week.
