ELIMINATE Continued from page 1 Pike Central set to host North Posey in regular season finale By Dennis Marshall Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Pike Central hosts North Posey (3-5, 2-4 Pocket Ath- letic Conference) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Weathers Field in each team's regu- lar season finale. This game is especial- ly important to the Char- gers' faithful because for- mer Pike Central head foot- ball coach Erik Mattingly is now an assistant coach for the Vikings. "When he left, he didn't have very nice things to say about our school or community," current Pike Central head coach Dave Stephens said. "So there is some extra, added in- centive for at least my se- niors who played for him." It will also be senior night for Pike Central. "There is a lot of motiva- tion," Stephens said. "We want to send our seniors out with a good competi- tive showing." The Chargers led the Vi- kings 13-7 at halftime be- fore falling by a final score of 34-13 last year. "We played with a lot of emotion last year and had a lead at halftime," Stephens said. "I felt like we let them off the hook in the second half. Our kids will be fired up." The Vikings will run a little bit of everything on offense, but will primari- ly line up in a shotgun for- mation. "They will run 15 dif- ferent formations," Ste- phens said. "A lot of mis- direction, and smoke and mirrors. There are a lot of things they do where they are trying to trick you." North Posey doesn't have the same great size as Tell City and Forest Park, but neither did Southridge, which is who the Vikings are very comparable to. "We are going to keep our defense simple and hopefully stay disciplined," Stephens said. "They do a lot of the same things as Southridge, only they don't execute as well as South- ridge." North Posey is led by running back Zach Lowe and quarterback Jaxon Wiggins. Pike Central will have its hands full as the team is down to just 15 total play- ers. "It going to be a chal- lenge for us, but we are used to challenges," Ste- phens said. "That's where we are at." SOMETHING NEWSWORTHY? Give us a call: 812-354-8500 "He will be a nice weap- on to have back next year," Stephens said. "He has a pretty nice leg and I think he has kicked up to a 47-yarder in practice this season." The Raiders added six more touchdown in the first half to make the score 49 -3 at halftime. A bright spot for the Chargers was when Cody Davis beautifully read a screen pass and hauled in an interception. It was Pike Central's first interception of the season. "He doesn't get enough credit," Stephens said. "He is going to be a good coach someday. He could play any position on the line. He knows every one of the po- sitions. He sees things and thinks like a football play- er. He's probably the guy we have on the offensive and defensive line that real- ly thinks the game through the way it needs to be." Davis busted through the Raiders' offensive line, but immediately realized something was up and he fell right back in front of the intended receiver. "We tell them in practice that if all of a sudden they turn into an All-American pass rusher, then some- thing is up," Stephens said. "You can see that thought process from Cody's body language. That was a great, wonderful, high football IQ and awareness play by him. He deserves all of the cred- it on that play." It was great to see the ex- citement and enthusiasm on Pike Central's sideline after such a trying season. "We all get into this game because it's fun, so that was really nice to see," Stephens said. "I felt like we had a couple of moments on Friday night where we had a lot of fun." Another positive thing for the Chargers was when they ran Southridge's counter criss-cross for a nice gain later in the game. The wet and slippery conditions were a factor, as Pike Central lost four of its six total fumbles, three of which were returned for touchdowns by South- ridge's Aidan Jochem, who seemed to be in the exact right place at the exact right time all night. Pike Central will host North Posey (3-5, 2-4 PAC) on Friday, Oct. 18 in its reg- ular season finale. Pike Central gets rematch with Brown County in sectional By Dennis Marshall Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Pike Central will host its first football playoff game since 2011. It was announced during the 47th annual IHSA A Foot- ball State Tournament Pair- ing Show on Sunday, Oct. 13. Pike Central will host Brown County (3-5, 1-3 West- ern Indiana–East) in a re- match from week one, where the Eagles defeated the Char- gers 41-19. "I am ecstatic," Pike Cen- tral head coach Dave Ste- phens said. "The fact that we get to be home for sectionals and play tournament football in front of our fans is amaz- ing. I know how difficult that two-plus-hour drive can be." Brown County has thrown the ball about three times as much as its ran it this season. Quarterback Noah Carter picked the Chargers apart in their first match-up. He went 16 -of-19 for 223 yards with three touchdowns and no in- terception. He's completed 108 -of-182 pass attempts for 1,447 yards with 10 touch- downs and nine intercep- tions total this season. He's also the team's second-lead- ing rusher with 140 yards and two touchdowns on 29 attempts. "I think they are in a more difficult position than us," Stephens said. "When you're in a spot where you have had success and did well. Now you're trying to figure what do I need to do. It's different for us because we understand that we came up short from what we wanted to do. So now we have the ability to tweak the things that we need to tweak. I think there is some advantage to being in the po- sition that we are and having the opportunity to right the wrongs from the first game." The Pike Central-Brown County winner will face the winner of Sullivan (5 -3, 3- 2 Western Indiana–West) at Vincennes Lincoln (4-4, 2-3 Big Eight). On the other side of the bracket its Edgewood (6 -2, 3-1 Western Indiana– East) at Washington (0 -8, 0 - 5 Big Eight) and Princeton (1-7, 1-4 Big Eight) at Owen Valley (1-7, 1-3 Western Indi- ana–East). The sectional game will start at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oc- tober 25 at Weathers Field.
