I was surprised to see in the paper that Don Gross passed away on Sept. 27 at the age of 86. When the Trading Post was open, that was a place you could have seen Don and Donna eating dinner and on special occa- sions. Now they are togeth- er again and smiling. We were shocked to hear of the passing of Chuck Pat- ton on Sept. 30. He loved his family and friends, and if you needed help, he was there. To Cheryl, Caysha, Jim and Rosemary, remem- ber the great times and share your memories, and more will be added to yours. There are already quite a few who have the Hallow- een spirit of fun. Winslow seniors meet on Monday and Tuesday at the Community Center. Petersburg seniors meet on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday in the courthouse basement. There were no postcards in the mailbox. Winslow Patoka River is still low and no rain as of yet, maybe Sunday the 6th, but we will see what hap- pens. The temps have been in the 90s, but the heat in- dex is well into the high 90s to 100s until Thursday the 3rd, when the west and northwest winds began to pull those temps down to the low 70s for a few days. The windows could be opened, be we may have to close them in the night- time that call for temps in the 40s. Some of our stars have said they may start a fire in the stove. The mow- ers have been heard but with no rain, the grass has not grown and some have brown grass. Norm mowed our front area, it's the part that grows taller than our other sections. But when he mowed, he decided to not mow it close to the ground. It looks great even after two weeks of now mowing, but if it rains, the mower will be running again in a week. Our walnut tree has already changed its colors and some leaves are falling. I saw a family out raking up the leaves in their yard, but no one had their leaves piled up to jump into yet. Kids, it is lots of fun. Sept. 27 and 28 was the 3rd Petersburg Buffalo Trace Festival and we hope you all had loads of fun with family on those days. Sept. 28 was the Pike County Tractor Drive that is part of the Winslow Com- munity Festival and it was their 12th year of traveling the backroads behind the wheels of a tractor. This year, as we left Hill's Auction, there were 23 trac- tors and their riders who enjoyed the 31.6 miles and our driver was Mike Wha- ley. We sat on some bales of straw on a trailer. Some tractors had their driver, but there were some trac- tors that pulled some type of wagon or trailer. Our backroad route traveled paved, rock and dirt roads, but at one area, our trac- tor and another tractor cut through a field because the intersection was too tight of a turn. That was excit- ing and so was the road that looked like a less-trav- eled road for vehicles as it was through a cornfield. It is now harvest time in Pike County, but not all the fields are harvested, but the corn and beans are ready. Toma- toes are ripe on the vines in a few gardens. Along the side of the roads, we saw Morning Glory of blue, a few white trumpet flowers, daisy flowers like small sunflow- ers or Blackeyed Susans, trees with red berries, some honeysuckle and in yards, a bush of small pur- ple blooms. We waved at the people who came out to see and enjoy all the trac- tors that passed by and even the dogs were stunned to see so many tractors pass by. The temp that day was 90 de- grees, with a breeze blowing and the roads were dusty. I think all of us brought home on us about a small flower pots worth of dirt, but it was worth it. We saw south of Otwell into the White Oak area, past Pike County, Bill Hayes' gravesite and north of White Oak Lake, past the old landfill, then onto Cato, past the Old Ben Reserva- tion and then into Algiers, where at the United Meth- odist church, we all stopped for lunch. We had coney dogs, baked beans, potato salad, chips and cookies, plus tea or water and the service was delightful. The food was real tasty. From there, we traveled through Dutchtown (I believe) and into Highbanks, where over the tree line was the White River and our last town was Iva before we reached the end of our six hour tour of the backroads of Pike Coun- ty. I know we were all real- ly tuckered out, but for me, I enjoyed looking at the fields and then to see some areas of Pike County I never would have seen otherwise. I would like to say thanks to two Pike County officers who stopped the traffic so we could all travel together. There were a few yards that had their Halloween decora- tions out and everyone did a great job. Thank you to the Pike County Tractor Drive people who put this on ev- ery year. We all love the places we see and it gives most of us the chance to see what Pike County history is or was when that small town was a booming place to raise a family. Thanks again for your event for all of us to enjoy. Thursday the 3rd was the Chamber of Commerce Ex- po in the old gym, where 100 plus stars came out to this event, where you could also get your flue shot and lots of free gifts from businesses. Have you noticed the pav- ing that was done in parts of Winslow-Cato Road? As we passed by, the flaggers are so friendly as they wave back at you. Hi, Maddie! Highway 61 has had sev- eral months off an on of utility work, where the tall iron posts replace the wood- en ones, then the wires to connect each of our ser- vices are installed. The flag- gers are so friendly there too. But remember to slow down. The news on the Spur- geon Festival will be in next week's column. The lights are about to dim for this week, but keep an eye on family and friends, slow down and enjoy your area. Stop for school buses. Then, always smile, wave and say hi to ev- eryone you see this week. PEACE of MIND Let our 130 years of experience aid you in your selection of a meaningful memorial. SCHUM MONUMENTS, INC.
