SOLD SOLD SOLD SOLD SOLD SOLD SOLD Addiction…overdose… death…all of these seri- ous consequences have become synonymous with opioid use. Opioids are very pow- erful drugs that have re- ceived a lot of news cov- erage lately. However, through all of the coverage the reason opioids have be- come so addictive has got- ten lost. So, what exactly is an opioid? Why are people ad- dicted to them? According to the Mayo Clinic website, mayoclinic.org, an opioid is a broad group of pain-re- lieving drugs that work by interacting with the opi- oid receptors in your brain cells, meaning an opioid can temporarily control your brain. Opioids trigger the brain to release a signal that lessons your percep- tion of pain and increas- es your feeling of pleas- ure. This feeling of pleas- ure, though temporary, has led to repeated over- doses. The Center for Dis- ease Control (CDC) cur- rently reports 130 Amer- icans die every day from opioid-related overdoses. This crisis is one that everyone can help com- bat, even if you think it does not affect you direct- ly. One of the easiest meth- ods to combat this problem is proper disposal of un- used medications. All un- used/expired medications become quite dangerous when found by the wrong person. This is especial- ly dangerous when medi- cations find their way into the hands of a child. In order to help pre- vent this issue it's best to get those medications out of your home. You might think you need to go to your medicine cabinet and flush those unused pills down the toilet or maybe throw them directly into the trash. You are not en- tirely wrong, but both of those disposal methods re- quire a couple more steps in order to be effective. So, what exactly is the proper means for dispos- ing of your expired or un- used prescriptions? One option is to bring the un- wanted medications to an authorized collector. An authorized collector will simply take the medica- tions, with no questions asked, and properly dis- pose of them for you. To find an authorized collec- tor near you, please call the DEA Office of Diver- sion Control at 1-800 -882- 9539. Another option is to flush your unused med- ications down the toilet. However, before you rush to flush all of your medi- cations, please be advised that not all medicines are recommended for flush- ing. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has a list of medicines ap- proved for flushing that can be found by checking their website at www.fda. gov. If your medication is not on the approved list, you can always take it to an authorized collector or utilize the next option. The final disposal option is to throw the medications in the trash. Proper trash disposal requires that the medication be mixed, not crushed, with an inedible substance and closed firm- ly in a container or plastic bag. If you choose to dis- pose of the medication in its original pill bottle, it is recommended to scratch off or remove any identify- ing labels. Now that you know the proper method for dispos- ing those unused prescrip- tions, take time to rid your home of them in a safe manner. Proper prescrip- tion medication disposal may not solve the opioid crisis, but it certainly will not worsen it. If anything, safe-proofing your home for your loved ones is an excellent reason to prop- erly dispose of unused/ex- pired medications. JAMAICAN JERK CHICKEN MEALS IN Monica's MINUTES Share your favorite recipe! www.facebook.com/mealsinminutes Monica's Meals in Minutes PO Box 68, Petersburg, IN 47567 mealsinminutes@pressdispatch.net FACEBOOK MAIL EMAIL By Monica Sinclair This past weekend, my hus- band and I tried Jamaican food for the first time. And let me just say, I am in love! Everything we ate was amazing. So, I thought in order to give my readers an opportunity to try something different, I would look for a fair- ly easy Jamaican recipe this week and luckily, I found why. It may take a little longer than the normal recipes I put in, but it will be worth it, trust me. Enjoy! INGREDIENTS • 10 chicken legs • 1/3 cup olive oil • 2 tbsp. light brown sugar, packed • 1 heaping tbsp. dried thyme • 2 tsp ground allspice • 2 tsp smoked paprika • 1 tsp cinnamon • 1 tsp ground ginger • 1 tsp ground cloves • 1 tsp cayenne pepper • 2 tsp kosher salt • 1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 425F with rack on lower mid- dle position. 2. Use paper towels to thoroughly dry chicken legs of excess moisture. Use fork to poke holes on all sides of chicken legs. Set aside. 3. In a bowl, combine all remaining ingredients to form a spice rub/paste mixture. 4. Evenly rub mixture underneath the skin of chick- en legs, as well as on top. 5. Place chicken on large rimmed baking sheet, with space in between each piece. Bake 35 -40 minutes or until nicely browned. Serve immediately. Source: chewoutloud.com Opioids and Rx awareness
