The Press-Dispatch Sports Wednesday, September 11, 2019 B- 5 Pike Central volleyball still searching for first conference win By Dennis Marshall Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net It was another tough week for Pike Central volleyball as the team lost four match- es and is still seeking its first Pocket Athletic Conference victory of the season. Pike Central started the week with a 3-0 loss at For- est Park (6 -6) on Tuesday, Sept.. 3. The Chargers were the most competitive, losing the first set 25 -20, before falling 25 -15 and 25 -18 in the second and third. "We had some great digs, kills and service runs in the first set, but Forest Park was able to just edge us out," Pike Central coach Brandi Chest- nut said. "Forest Park at- tacked every time the ball came to their side. A few dig- ging and hitting errors set us back." Aubrey Dawson and Ken- zie Powell played well for the Chargers, but the Rangers depth was just too much. Powell had 17 assists, five kills and seven digs and Daw- son had a kill, three aces and 10 digs. Erika Vinnedge was strong on offense for Pike Central. She finished with eight kills, an assist and a dig. Aubrey Keepes had four kills, three assists, two blocks and three digs; Ashlyn Shoultz had four kills, a block and a dig; Karen Pipes had three kills, an as- sist and four digs; Lily Fred- erick-Rice had a kill and six digs; Addie Johnson had sev- en digs; Neeley Correll had two digs; Shelby Ridao had two digs; Emma Russel had a dig and Lily Willis had an assist. REITZ SWEEPS PIKE CENTRAL The F.J. Reitz Panthers (3- 6) traveled to PCHS and de- feated the Chargers 25 -13, 25 -18, 25 -19 on Wednesday, Sept.. 4. "I think Reitz was a very beatable team," Chestnut said. "We had some good kills and found some good holes to tip to for points, but were unable to really get our blocking game together." Powell had another stand- out effort. She finished with seven digs, eight assists, four kills and an assist. Keepes had six digs and five kills; Vinnedge had three kills; Frederick-Rice had two kills and two digs; Dawson had 11 digs and a kill; Pipes had seven digs and an assist; Johnson had three digs and three assists; Correll had two digs and Russell had two digs and an assist. JUG ROX EDGE CHARGERS Pike Central went on the road to Shoals (6 -7) on Thursday, Sept.. 5. The Jug Rox fought off val- iant efforts from the Char- gers to win 3-2. Pike Central won the first set 25 -19 and Shoals took the second 25 -12. Pike Cen- tral was in command after go- ing up 2-1 with a 25 -22 victo- ry in the third set, but Shoals fought back to win the fourth and fifth sets 25 -18 and 15 -5. "We played well in the Shoals match," Chestnut said. "It came down to the fifth set. We got behind and ran out of steam. This match was one of the best we have played this season." Johnson had one of her best defensive games of the season. She led the team with 18 digs. Powell had 17 digs, 15 assists, six kills and two aces; Dawson had 11 digs, four kills, three assists and an ace; Keepes had 11 digs, four kills and an assist; Shoul- tz had four digs, three kills, an ace and an assist; Pipes had 10 digs, three kills, two aces, two assists and a block; Vinnedge had three kills, a block and an ace; Willis had eight digs, two aces, a kill; Maddie Williams had a kill; Riley Morgan had an ace; Frederick-Rice had two digs and an assist and Correll had a dig. Pike Central also lost 3-1 to Southridge (4-8) on Mon- day, Sept.. 9, but statistics were not available by press time. The team also traveled to Wood Memorial (0 -9) on Tuesday, Sept.. 10, and will compete in the Evansville Central Invite on Saturday. The Chargers will also host North Posey (7-4) on Monday, Sept.. 16 and be on the road at Princeton (3-7) on Tuesday, Sept.. 17. PIKE COUNTY YOUTH SOCCER Chargers set to take on Marksmen By Dennis Marshall Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Pike Central's lone win in 2018 was a 7-6 nail-biter at Tell City. The Marksmen (2-1) will come to town on Friday with revenge on their minds and will take on the Chargers Friday at Weathers Field. "We're going to see a lot of the same stuff we saw out of Heritage Hills," Pike Cen- tral head coach Dave Ste- phens said. "A lot of flex- bone, some wishbone and some unbalanced stuff. What they do a little differ- ently from Heritage Hills is they will attack the back- side more from the orbit mo- tion. They will be a little less predictable in what they are doing. They will play some games with their line splits and with some go-heavy I formations." Tell City rushed 40 times for 272 yards and four touchdowns in a 32-6 win over South Spencer (0 -3) this past week, including 114 and a touchdown by Mitchell Foster. Quarterback Aden Dod- son rushed 11 times for 70 yards and two touchdowns. Bren Miller ran five times for 35 yards and Shane Braunecker rushed for 25 yards and a score on six touches. "They have some of the same issues we have here," Stephens said. "This will be the first time all season that we faced a defensive line who's body weight is com- parable to our offensive line. I'm excited to have the op- portunity, at least on paper, to come into a fair fight." Stephens said this is as healthy as Pike Central has been since he's been in- volved with the program. "Some things I know you can't help," he said. "But other things like muscle strains and sprains are pre- ventable by making sure we work hard on things like our shoulder strength, core strength, flexibility and change of direction.
