Registration open for Buffalo Trace softball tourney Registration is open for the co-ed slow-pitch soft- ball tournament that will take place during the Buf- falo Trace Festival. The tournament will take place on Friday, Sept. 29 and Saturday, Sept. 30 at the Petersburg Little League Field. It costs $200 per team, with up to 13 individuals on each squad. By Dennis Marshall Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Pike Central boys' soccer went 1-1-1 this past week, starting with a thrilling, 3- 2 overtime win over South Spencer (3-3-0) in on Tues- day, Sept. 3. It was the Chargers' first Pocket Athletic Conference game of the season. "We made some costly mistakes in the game," Pike Central coach Jacob Western said. "But still found a way to win without playing our best. The boys could have folded a couple different times, but held strong and made plays when we needed them most." The Chargers (5 -2- 1) scored about halfway through the first half when Sam Henson's shot was de- flected into the goal by a South Spencer player. The Rebels scored off a header to tie the score 1-1 with about eight minutes remaining in the first half. "We had worked on this ex- act play a lot the day before during practice, so it was frustrating to get scored on this way," Western said. South Spencer capitalized off some Pike Central mis- takes to take a 2-1 advantage early in the second half. "We created a lot of chanc- es throughout the entire sec- ond half, but couldn't get one to find the back of the net," Western said. However, Gabe Caldwell worked over the right back and was fouled in the box, drawing a penalty kick with about eight minutes remain- ing. Ethan Scott stepped up and made the penalty kick, tying the score at 2-2. The Chargers and Reb- els finished the second half tied, and with it being a con- ference match they went in- to overtime. Carson Johnson played a great ball in behind the back line and Scott took a couple of touches and then slotted it past the keeper for the go- ahead goal with three min- utes remaining in overtime. "We were playing for the win, and it felt like South Spencer was trying to get to [penalty kicks], going more defensive," Roach said. "De- fensively our back four of Andrew Clark, Jersey Mills, Garrett Boyd and Xavier Shoultz did a great job lock- ing it down when we really needed too." Noah Whann came up big once again in goal, finishing with 12 saves. CHARGERS AND PIONEERS TIE Pike Central and Boonville (2-2-4) tied 1-1 after a hard- fought, physical road game on Thursday, Sept. 5. The Chargers' lone goal was scored by Scott and as- sisted by Garrett Boyd. "We came out ready to play and scored our only goal of the night pretty early in the game," Western said. "We played even for the rest of the first half, and the start of the second half was not so good. We gave up a goal one minute into the half to tie the game." Since it was not a confer- ence game the teams did not play overtime. "We had a few really good chances late in the second half, but were unable to fin- ish," Western said. "But soph- omore Devin Carlisle came in during the second half and gave us 20 great minutes out of the middle. I expect to keep seeing his playing time increase." Whann finished the game with 15 saves in goal. PRINCETON BLANKS PIKE CENTRAL Pike Central finished its week at Princeton on Satur- day, Sept. 7. The Tigers (5 -1-0) defeat- ed the Chargers 1-0. "We knew that this game was going to be really diffi- cult, with it being the third tough game of the week," Western said. The score remained 0 -0 for most of the game with Pike Central missing out on the opportunities to hit the post. Princeton was able to score with about eight minutes re- maining. "It came from their best player getting free around the top of the 18 -yard box," Western said. "The last few games we have been scored on, it has came on things that we have worked on tak- ing away at practice. We have to do a better job of staying locked in for all 80 minutes. One mistake has cost us in a couple of games." Western said offensively, the team is going to focus on getting more guys going for- ward and try to create more quality chances. Whann finished with 11 saves. Pike Central won the junior varsity match-up with Prince- ton, 1-0, thanks to a goal from Isaac Burette that was assist- ed by Brycen Knepp. "The defense limited their chances and we passed the ball extremely well and had a bunch of good chances on goal," Western said. "The JV continues to play very well together, it is exciting to see how much they improve each game." Pike Central hosted South Knox (7-0 -0) on Tues- day, Sept. 10, and will trav- el to North Posey (1-3-0) on Thursday, Sept. 12, and For- est Park (2-5 -1) on Saturday, Sept. 14. The Chargers will also host Tell City (3-3-1) in a makeup game on Monday, Sept. 16. Pike Central High School boys' soccer goes 1-1-1 "We would like to thank the parents and the huge crowd for the support in helping Pike Central in a big win." Lauren Young and Keena Young played really well to hold off South Spencer on de- fense throughout the game. Capehart played great, mov- ing around on defense in a couple different spots and Adair Kabrick played well all over the field with being tasked to mark the Rebels' best player a lot of the time. Albany Ashley, Kahle Young and Lillian Thomp- son were big in front of the defense all night. The Char- gers' offense was limited at times, but Morgan Houch- ins, Roy, Abigail Skelton, Al- li Holder, Shelby Vaughn and Kennedy Willis gave it their all. PIKE CENTRAL TIES AT BOONVILLE Pike Central and Boon- ville (1-1-3) played to 0 -0 tie on Thursday, Sept. 5. "Boonville is a good team that has already beaten or tied some teams we have to play yet," Western said. "We had several players with nag- ging injuries and a couple more that had issues." Both teams played well with the defense standing out on both ends. "Our defense was play- ing well, so we relied on that to get us through the game without allowing a goal," Western said. "Our offense was not at full strength, but no excuses, Boonville has a very good defense." Horrall had 14 saves, and made a huge impact again on Thursday. "She is a very high quality goalie for us," Western said. Keena and Kahle Young held down the left side of the defense, and limited Boon- ville all night. Young, Han- nah Woodford and Cape- hart played well on the right side of the defense, and Ash- ley and Kabrick played huge roles in the middle of the field. "We were not as good as Tuesday, and that happens sometimes," Western said. Pike Central will host Princeton (3-3-1) on Thurs- day, Sept. 12 and be on the road at Forest Park (2-3-1) on Saturday, Sept. 14. The team will also host Tell City (0 -3- 0) on Monday, Sept. 16 and travel to South Knox (2-6 -0) on Tuesday, Sept. 17. PCMS football: Chargers shutout Warriors in second half for 32-20 win By Dennis Marshall Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Pike Central's eighth- grade football team im- proved 2-0 this season after a 32-20 win at North Knox on Thursday, Sept. 5. The teams were tied 20 - 20 at halftime before the Chargers shut out the War- riors in the second half. "Coming into the week we felt really good about what we had," Pike Cen- tral middle school coach Jorden Froderman said. "But with a shortened week of practice we real- ly came out sluggish. Ear- ly on we had our struggles and they were giving us fits on both offense and de- fense. A fter going into half- time tied at 20, we knew we were in a dogfight and the game could go either way, depending on how we came out after the half. We made some adjustments both schematically and person- nel-wise and shut them out in the second half. I am very proud of the grit our boys showed tonight, this was the first time these boys have had to deal with some adversity and they handled it well." Eighth-grade quar- terback Quade Morton rushed for 295 yards and four touchdowns. He also passed for 69 yards and a score. Julian Gish recorded his third interception of the season and also caught a touchdown reception, and Ari McDonald had 16 rush- ing yards. The Chargers played with a combined team of their seventh and eighth- grade squads due to North Knox only having one team. "I really feel glad we were able to experience this tonight because as tal- ented as these boys are, we have to be able to grind out tough games," Froderman said. "We have been deal- ing with some injuries this week and the guys that we had filling in contributed in key ways. I really want to thank my seventh grad- ers even though they didn't get to play as much as we would have hoped. I know we wouldn't have been able to win tonight if they didn't give us a good look through this week of practice." Froderman said he also want to thank his coach- ing staff. "Alonzo Barnes does a great job with our lines," he said. "Judah Leathco has really excelled stepping in- to a coaching roll after play- ing for the high school last year. Caleb Cherry brings a lot of experience to this staff and is a very valuable member of the staff both during games and in prac- tice." Pike Central will be on the road this week at Gib- son Southern on Thursday, Sept. 12. PAC approves divisions based on enrollment By Dennis Marshall Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net The Pocket Athletic Con- ference announced it is go- ing to divisions on Tuesday when the board of directors adopted several conference guidelines starting in the fall of 2020. This comes after the addi- tions of new members Boon- ville, Mount Vernon, Princ- eton and Washington were approved this past June. The conference elected to split into two divisions based on enrollment when it moves to 12 teams next season. The divisions will be reclassified every four years based on enrollment at the time. Based on current school enrollment numbers, the large school division would be Gibson Southern, Boon- ville, Washington, Princ- eton, Heritage Hills and Mount Vernon. The small school division would be Pike Central, Southridge, Tell City, South Spencer, North Posey and Forest Park. Each division will have a champion based on division record. Tecumseh will remain in- dependent in football. The following sports will play all conference schools with a conference cham- pion being determined by conference record: boys' and girls' basketball, boys' and girls' soccer, boys' and girls' tennis, softball, base- ball and volleyball. The following sports will host conference tourna- ments to determine a cham- pion: boys' and girls' cross country, boys' and girls' golf, boys' and girls' swim- ming, boys' and girls' track and wrestling.
