By Suzi McKee After graduating from the University of Tennessee with a degree in finance, Lonnie Salyer never dreamed his life would take a musical turn - one that would impact not only his life but the lives of future generations in the Tri-Cities. Lonnie had always liked music and after participating in Leadership Kingsport in 2011, the seed was planted for making a concentrated effort to give back to the community in which Lonnie had grown up. The Dobyns-Bennett grad had collected a variety of things as he grew up: sports cards and Beatles and Rolling Stones music to name a few. But his thirst for the historical aspect of music and recording studios in the area started Lonnie on a journey that has brought him to a new chapter in his life. "About three years ago, I was looking on eBay for a CD of Sticks McGhee who was a blues guy from here in Kingsport," Lonnie began, "and I ran across a 78-rpm record that was listed from Kingsport Records. I knew about Trail Records here in town because a distant cousin owned it but learning about another recording studio really stirred my interest." With this one find, Lonnie set about to begin research to learn as much as possible about the history of early music in this area. One of the first things he learned was that between 1946 and the early 1980s, there were about 18 recording labels and studios between Rogersville and Big Stone Gap, Virginia. "Most of these records, companies and artists have very little documentation on them," Lonnie continued, "so my mission is to discover the musical heritage of our area one dusty old record at a time." Lonnie's musical step back in time is driven by a passion for preserving the history of the music industry in the Tri-Cities. He's become somewhat of an expert and continually searches in flea markets, antique stores and old record shops for labels and artists from this area. He currently owns two 78-rpm records that are the only known copies in the world, but he stresses that he values the historical preservation more than the monetary value of his collection. Because of the growing interest in his work, Lonnie has created a Facebook page called, "Big Lon's Crateful Dig." It's a play on words, he explains, because record collectors go "crate digging" looking for elusive labels and artists. "I just thought it was a catchy title and as more information about my passion spreads, my following continues to grow," he added. Lonnie uses the Facebook page to gather information from people in the Tri-Cities and beyond who have intimate knowledge of a band, a band member, or a record that is found in someone's attic. Lonnie was invited to join the founders of The Ernest Tube, a business in Bristol with a sister facility in Cleveland, Ohio, for their Open House during Rhythm and Roots last year. Lonnie played some of the local records that he's collected and received a lot of attention from the crowd in attendance. Kris Truelsen, Director of Radio Bristol, was impressed with Lonnie's knowledge and collection of local recordings and invited him to do a live radio show that has evolved into "Diggin' with Big Lon." Broadcast from The Birthplace Of Country Music Museum on WBCM 100.1 FM, Lonnie's show features local, original vintage records from the 45 and 78 rpm format. "The show is featured on Thursdays at 5 p.m. and is streamed to 130 countries around the world. You can also listen to it at listenradiobristol.org or with a smart phone app. The coolest part is they let me play what I want - soul, garage rock, country, bluegrass, gospel, all local records," Lonnie continued. In addition to the radio show, "Big Lon" plays a live 45 rpm show at Elderbrew in Bristol from 7 to 9 p.m., the last Thursday of each month. With exposure on the web and contact from an ETSU Appalachian Studies Program professor, Lonnie has begun working with a record company in Germany to assist them with the compilation of a historical collection that will be released soon. "It's really come full circle. I have avid music fans from all around the world contacting me about artists and records from the Tri-Cities and surrounding locales. I'm a brand ambassador, if you will, for Appalachian musical culture." The local community has recognized his passion as well. Lonnie has been a guest blogger for the Birthplace of Country Music Museum and was recently named to the board of directors of the Kingsport-based Appalachian Cultural Music Association and Mountain Music Museum. "I have a passion for what I do," Lonnie explained, "I'm not just a collector; I want to know the story behind the band, the record, and how the recording came into existence." And what will become of the hard work that Lonnie Salyer has devoted to the musical heritage of our area once he's finished with it? "I want to leave my work to a local museum or archive so that future generations can learn more about the important role our area played in the music industry of America," Lonnie said. INDEX Because of the growing interest in his work, Lonnie Salyer created "Big Lon's Crateful Dig" - a Facebook page where he gathers and shares information about the history of the region's early music. By T. Glen Moody, Ph.D., Curator and Katherine Scoggins After I finished the Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership I spent 5 years in post-doctoral research teaching doctoral students Organizational Behavior, Organizational Culture and Change, Decision Science, and Behavioral Economics. In every class and research project we delved into the many facets and tiers of organizational structures, processes and changes. Not to anyone's surprise, we found time and again that (a) change in organizations is necessary and (b) we all hate change. Irish writer George Bernard Shaw said "progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything." The old expression "the only thing constant is change" is true in life and business, and especially true in the book business where an average of 5,000 new book titles are produced every day. The effect is that when a new book is published an older title goes out of print, so instead of just working with 5 million books in print, we typically work with a database of 5 million books in print plus nearly 100 million titles that are out of print (in English). Welcome to the "new AND used" book business. I Love Books Bookstore has about 400 different categories of books, many which include both new and used books. Because a category may have between 12 and 2,000 titles, new categories and sub-categories are continuously added and categories are relocated to different places in the store, depending on space, demand and utility. We have just expanded our quilting books, classic car books, woodworking books and architectural books. We're reducing our selection of business books (currently 2,000 titles), some fiction, and other slower categories. That means we constantly have numerous price reductions and sales' tables in the store and outside the front of the store. The majority of new book titles are released in the fall of the year, so we're trying to make more room. Embrace the change, the bargains and the wide selection of books at I Love Books Bookstore. You'll be glad you did. Speaking of new book titles... This year has produced two from popular regional author Dr. Lin Stepp - book 11 in her Smoky Mountain Novels series and "Discovering Tennessee State Parks" co-authored with husband J.L. Stepp. The Stepps will sign copies of their books from 2 to 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 8, at I Love Books Bookstore. The Stepps "specialize" in writing books about Tennessee State Parks and pack their websites and blogs with folksy information and lots of wonderful photos. In a recent phone interview with columnist Katherine Scoggins, Dr. Stepp explained what drove her to start writing the Nature Guide Books - and then what inspired the works of fiction. "J.L. and I liked to walk - not the long, strenuous hikes, the moderate-paced hikes. But we could never find books on hikes that we could find out much about," Dr. Stepp explained. They hiked 110 hiking trails in the Great Smoky Mountains to write their first guidebook, "The Afternoon Hiker" and then explored 56 Tennessee State Parks over a two-year period, culminating in their latest book "Discovering Tennessee State Parks." They love to get out of doors and are already starting another guidebook. One of those individuals who excels at multitasking, Dr. Stepp made it her goal to complete two novels a year. "I've always been a reader," she explains, "and I grew up in these mountains. The people here are honest people with good stories to tell. That's the type of stories I wanted to read. According to my publisher, a lot of other people wanted to read those stories, too, but there weren't any available, so I started writing them." And, based on her success, they were a huge hit - resulting in her reaching bestseller status in the publishing world. "I write about people I know, that we've met in our travels and people that live the kind of lives we live. I travel in the Smoky Mountains and around the Appalachian area a lot of the time. I stop in small towns, at music festivals, and like to visit old homesteads and farms," she said. Dr. Stepp's enthusiasm for this part of the country is infectious. She has been called "a wonderful ambassador of this area." Her books are popular with teachers, grandmothers, teens and a certain East Tennessee singer and actress (Dolly)." "I thought it would be a good idea to get Dolly Parton interested in some of my fiction and Dolly loves my books. By her request, I send her a copy of every new Smoky Mountain novel released," Dr. Stepp shared. All of the books have wide appeal. "My books are clean and decent - they don't deal with a lot of questionable conduct or graphic issues." Come meet the Stepps and purchase their books at I Love Books Bookstore this Saturday (Sept. 8) from 2 to 4 p.m. I Love Books is located on the upper level of the Fort Henry Mall in Kingsport. INDEX Dr. Lin and J.L. Stepp will sign copies of their books from 2 to 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 8, at I Love Books Bookstore. (Contributed) Change is constant at
