Sweets Column, Winslow, IN 47598 had no postcards or notes this week. Winslow Patoka River has gone down, but only to the rim. So, the Winslow Riverside Park has no wa- ter on the shelter house floor, and no water around the Eskimo, beaver and the circle road to the boat ramp. However, the boat ramp does have water. The park itself does have sev- eral ponds of water. The water over the road, near Union St., has receded and Miller's Field is okay to drive into again. There was one day be- fore the flood came into Riverside Park that I saw a flock of geese grazing in the park instead of the field across Highway 61, where they usually are. I mentioned that my garden spot of Black-eyed Susans has been wind whipped and some of them were on the ground, so as Norm mowed our corner lot, I decided to make a bou- quet of them before he mowed them down. I cut three flower vases full and still have plen- ty in the gar- den. I have seen Formosa trees and the orange lil- ies in bloom, and the Rose of Sharons of purple, red, white and pink are in full color in several yards in the area. The wetness that we have had has brought out the mosquitoes in full force in the morning and evening hours, depending on what kind of day, you will feel those varmints in the afternoon also. The temps of middle 90s are here but the heat index of 100 + could stay away, and the nights are not com- fortable when the temp is in the high 70s. Winslow had a severe storm warn- ing last Tuesday, July 2 and I thought the electric was going to go out again, but it was just a power surge and no power failure. Our truck needed new brakes, so as Steve and Norm worked on them, I guess the truck needed some of that TLC, because it fought them all day long. However, it is finally fixed. Besides the truck, Norm was mowing the lawn and all of a sudden, before the front lot was finished, the mower decided it would just stop. So, Wayne came to our rescue as he mowed our backyard and finished the patch in front. Good people are great to have and we have some great people around our town. We were out for a drive and passed by a field that had bales of hay dotted in several spots. It remind- ed me of those days where you have seen these bales all along the countryside, and wouldn't you have said, "Where is your cam- era? " Yes, it was not with me. Those skeletons I have spoken about near Oak- land City are dressed in military outfits and salut- ing the United States Navy. Fourth of July started off by texting Terri Ann and Laura, and later all the Virdens. Then we got ready to go to the 4th of Ju- ly parade in Otwell. Norm and I threw out candy from the Spurgeon-Mon- roe fire truck with Melvin and Scottie. The new truck 62 looked really great with all its equipment that had Donnie and Maverick. Then, the mule with all its equipment that Keith and Mark rode in. I did see the parade from the fire truck as it left the old elementary school, then it was our turn to join in the parade and throw out the candy and wave at the kids and their parents, and their neigh- bors and friends. Norm said no one called out his name this year, but I heard Barb and Barbie called out to me. Oh my! I saw several stars I knew that come ev- ery year from Winslow and the parade lasted about 45 minutes. We had a great time. We even saw that Senator Mark Messmer was there with his trum- pet. Most people grill or eat at the 4th of July celebra- tion, so we did just the opposite. We cooked our brats on the stove and stayed inside until it was time to go to the Otwell fireworks. The closeness in the air was not that comfortable but later on, the wind be- gan to blow when we got all set up to watch the fire- works in our lawnchairs in the bed of the truck. Our favorite spot is new a no parking, so we found an- other place as we saw the fireworks over a building. There was a neighbor who put on a great set of fire- works on a side street. The Otwell 4th of July fire- works lasted about 30 min- utes, but the homemade three-scoop ice cream hit the spot. We ran into sev- eral stars from Winslow and talked a while until my sweet treat was eaten. There were fireworks heard in the Brownstown part of Winslow and I saw a few that were set off over the hill northeast of our ar- ea. We saw where a neigh- bor had his set out for the neighborhood but got back into town after the event. They do it every year for the neighbors. We hope you all had a great time on the 4th of July and had as much fun as I did. Well, the lights are about to dim on this week, but keep an eye on family and friends, slow down for the kids playing, and don't miss the wonders of na- ture. Always smile, wave and say Hi to everyone you see this week.
