Popek The Beatles Guns 'n Roses If you want to get people arguing, ask them about music. The O-Town Scene's March Music Madness brackets, which pits 32 bands from the 1960s through the 1990s, sparked so much debate within this newsroom that we had to be asked, on occasion, to keep the noise down, as some people were actually trying to work. (The rest of us were too busy making the case for our favorite — or least favorite — bands to care.) If it were entirely up to me, the brackets on these pages would look a lot different. In fact, this whole thing started because of a series of conversations I had with my husband and a friend about which so-called "greats" of classic rock were the worst. She was not a fan of James Taylor and I have a deep fondness, especially for his early albums, and it grew from there. Billy Joel also came under some of her withering, but good-spirited, attacks. But she took the time to scan decades of music to compile a list of top band, and I was glad to be a part of her idea. I hope it provokes as much passionate discussions among readers of the O-Town Scene. While the ultimate winner was no surprise, it was fun to defend my choices for showdowns and take a position about such questions about whether the Who belonged in the 60s, where they did some of their seminal work, See Showdown on Page 14 12 O-Town Scene March 7, 2013 U2 Nirvana Nirvana R.E.M.
