They have strength- ened the hand of evildoers and intimidat- ed and restricted the religious of this na- tion. Shocked Christians are often puzzled as they see them oppose good and defend the evil. They are often on the wrong side of values and delight in attacking Christians. They seem determined to steer the great American dream into the dark wa- ters of moral decay. Christians must op- pose this dangerous trend and protect the true church and society. Jesus called us to be the "salt of the earth." This means we are to be a preserv- ing influence on our culture. Our forefa- thers recognized this teaching when they called America to be "a city that is set on a hill." A citadel of truth and righteousness. Unless the American people stand up for truth and justice, our true liberties will be taken and given to our enemies. We need a spiritu- al and moral awaken- ing among our politi- cal leaders, business- es, education system, government and the church. The voice of the church and mes- sage of the Bible has been weakened. The church has been so concerned about be- ing politically correct that its voice of clarity is no longer heard. There are enemies of the Christian faith and one of the most power- ful is the American Civil Liberties Union. If it is against the family, church and morality it probably approved by the A.C.L.U. It is for abortion, gay marriages, deviance, pornog- raphy and the liberal media that they fight to defend. In one simple sentence: "Wake up America, 9/11 could happen again." Proverbs 31:10 asks the question: "Who can find a virtuous woman...? " Webster's dictionary defines the word virtuous as gen- eral moral excellence, goodness of charac- ter, or chaste. The end of verse ten goes on to say if you can find such a woman, "her price [or value] is far above rubies." The standard here is not an unrealistic perfec- tion in all areas of life. Instead, it is an in- ward beauty of character and morals that can make any woman who seeks to culti- vate these qualities a highly valued woman to all who know her. We actually have biblical examples of vir- tuous women. Ruth was told that all the city knew she was a "virtuous woman" (Ruth 3:11) for her devotion to Jehovah, loving care for her elder mother-in-law, work eth- ic and humility to listen to instruction. The virtue of Sarah is described in 1 Peter 3:4- 6 for her submission to her husband with a "meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price." Proverbs 31 emphasizes several qualities of a virtuous woman. She is worthy of her husband's trust (verse 11), will always do her husband good and not evil (verse 12), diligently and consistently "worketh willing- ly" to advance family finances (verse 13-24), she conducts herself with "strength and honor" (verse 25), "opens her mouth with wisdom [or discretion, and]...kindness" (verse 26), and "looketh well to the ways of her household" without engaging in "idle- ness" (verse 27). Verse 30 seems to also im- ply that while she may possess or desire outward beauty, she realizes this is "vain," or empty, and fleeting. Therefore, she plac- es a higher value on the inner beauty of the virtues studied above, and she does so be- cause she has godliness or is "a woman that feareth the Lord." If you are a man who has found a virtuous woman, you are greatly blessed. Proverbs tells us "a prudent wife is from the Lord" (19:14), and she is "a crown to her husband" (12:4). Tell your virtuous woman today that you greatly appreciate her godliness, which makes her a true "trophy wife." If you're not yet married, this is the kind of woman you should be looking for. If you are a woman who is not satisfied that these qualities are developed fully enough in you, don't be dis- couraged. Instead, take one of these qual- ities, ask the Lord to help you grow in this virtue, and prayerfully work on it today. When I was a young man in my teens I worked a lot in the hay fields down around Union and Bowman. It was hard hot work, but it made us good spending money. The hay fields were as close as I got to knowing anything about farming. With all the rain we have been getting lately I would think the farmers are start- ing to become a little anxious about getting their crops in the ground. I know it has cer- tainly been hard to keep up with the mow- ing and yard work. I did mow the church yard without incident this past week and it was good not to hang up and spin around. My poor old mower still looks like a muddy four wheeler. I feel on top of my head and kind of wish my hair could grow as thick as the grass is growing right now. The Petersburg Lions Club had a team in German American's Clean sweep last Sat- urday morning and it didn't take us long to have our 10 bags of trash filled. Here is a big question— What is God doing when you are in a bind? When the life- boat springs a leak? When the rip cord snaps? When the last penny is gone before the last bill is paid? What are we doing? Nibbling on nails like corn on the cob, pacing floors, taking pills? But what does God do? He fights for us. He steps into the ring and points us to our corner and takes over. "Remain calm; the Lord will fight for you" (Exodus 14:14). His job is to fight. Our job is to trust. Just trust. Not direct. Or question...... Our job is to pray and wait.
