Pike Central High School's BPA members Kyle Williams and Sydney Keith recently returned from a well- earned trip to Anaheim, Calif. In March, at the state competition, the pair qualified to attend the Nation- al Conference May 1-5 and compete in this exciting location. Accompany- ing the students were Advisor Dana Deffendoll and Chaperone Angie Wil- liams. While there, Sydney and Kyle attended a lively opening session for the entirety of students who qualified for the National Conference. The Ana- heim Arena was packed with a cheer- ing crowd, livened by the exciting lights and sound show. Of course, the students had to get down to business and complete their events. This includ- ed the Business Law and Ethics test for Kyle. Sydney took her Medical Office Procedures test and also presented her Economic Research Project. The final night was comprised of an- other exciting session for awards and the closing of the conference. Students anxiously awaited the results for their efforts throughout the 2018 -19 BPA season. When the dust settled, Kyle placed 30 out of 66, and Sydney 31 out of 40. Their advisor, Deffendoll, says the students are competing against the best and brightest in the nation, and should be very happy with their per- formance. In their downtime, the group tried to embark on as many tourist activities as they could pack into their schedule. They visited Santa Monica, including the beach, pier and town center. This location offered a cool beach breeze, games and Ferris wheel, and unique sights. That evening, they attended an Angels baseball game, where the team faced the Toronto Blue Jays and pre- vailed in dominating fashion. Warner Bros. Studios would be the trip's last endeavor before returning to Indiana. A tour showed the group a museum full of props and costumes before see- ing several back lots, including the en- tire towns for hit shows like Pretty Lit- tle Liars and Gilmore Girls, along with the famous T-Rex/Jeep chase scene for Jurassic Park. The tour explored ma- ny sound stages, including the Ellen Show and Friends. Although there were no celebrity sightings, the trip was full of California's best sights, sounds and sunshine.
