Love Mom and Dad 1 col. x 3" (actual size) By Andy Heuring Press-Dispatch Sports A Wood Memorial player self-reported a scoring keep- ing error that led to his dis- qualification and Wood Me- morial losing to Pike Cen- tral in a match they thought they had won. Wood Memorial shot a 160 on Monday, April 20 and thought they had beaten Pike Central by two shots. Due to the wet weath- er they had been having, a ditch that runs across the first hole, that is normally dry, had water in it during this match. Several play- ers had hit their balls in- to the ditch. It is over a hill and can't be seen from the tee box on hole one. Paxton Schwomeyer couldn't find his ball on hole one. He and his playing partners thought it had gone in the ditch. So he dropped from there with a one stroke penalty. He went on to record a 40 and Wood won the match by two strokes. However, Schwomeyer lives across the street from the golf course. As he was walking home after the match, he saw a ball by the road and when he checked on it, found it was his ball. Schwomeyer reported it. Be- cause it was out of bounds, the penalty would have been stroke and distance. Conse- quently, he signed an incor- rect scorecard. With him disqualified, Wood Memo- rial's score was now cal- culated by a player whose score was 46. So Wood's team score was 166 instead of 160, making Pike Central the winner by four strokes. "Props to that young man. It doesn't get any more hon- est than that," said Pike Cen- tral Coach Jarrod Gideon. Self-reported error changes outcome SOMETHING NEWSWORTHY? Give us a call: 812-354-8500
