May 11 - 17, 2019 10 KINGSPORT (TN) TIMES NEWS "JAG" spawned the original "NCIS," but were you surprised to be asked to revive your "JAG" character – Navy man Harmon "Harm" Rabb Jr. – on "NCIS: Los Angeles" as it winds down its 10th season? Scott (executive producer R. Scott Gemmill) was a writer on "JAG," and he's a friend, and we were talking and I guess it evolved from there. It didn't come out of the blue, but I was thrilled and excited when this prospect first presented itself. I mean, who would have thought that I would wear this skin again? I certainly didn't. Especially since it's been 14 years since you last played the role, how was it for you to revisit Harm? The fun part about this for me is that it's a different Harm, an evolved Harm. He's taken a new career path, and that was important. I really felt we had run the gamut on Harm being in the JAG corps, so as the character rides again, he is an XO (executive officer) on a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in the Pacific. He has a host of new possibilities, and the stakes are bigger. How did you find it to combine Harm with such regular "NCIS: Los Angeles" characters as Callen and Sam (played by Chris O'Donnell and LL Cool J)? It was fun. Those guys were great to work with ... and the whole crew. It was a really enjoyable experience, and they couldn't have made it any easier. They were very welcoming, and I hope it's only the beginning. I hope there are more adventures to come, but it certainly was fun to do a big arc and not just a one-off (a single episode). David James Elliott OF 'NCIS: LOS ANGELES' ON CBS BY JAY BOBBIN BY JAY BOBBIN Since you're now dramatizing it on "Masterpiece," what is your own history with "Les Miserables"? It was the best book I ever read. I prefer it to Tolstoy or anything. It's extraordinary when you find yourself actually reading the extra five chapters about the history of the Paris sewers, and you think you couldn't possibly be interested. But (author Victor) Hugo is just such a master storyteller, he sees the story in everything. If you haven't read it, it's a great, great treat – and the great thing about it is it doesn't take any getting into, which most books do, I find. You're straight in there with the Bishop of Digne, and I actually loved it. I thought Valjean was the best superhero of all time. He scales buildings like Spider- Man and he speaks a lot like Iron Man, but neither of those characters has done 19 years hard labor in a French prison camp. So, he is the toughest of them all. He has struggled against his own demons, and he has struggled to do the right thing, the loving thing, rather than the vengeful thing, I think it's an amazing book and a rattling good read. How do you measure playing Jean Valjean against portraying Noah Solloway on "The Affair"? Living with Jean Valjean is a wonderful experience. Living with Noah Solloway is not. You know, these people get to you. Actually, I've discovered that although making evil is more dramatic, it's more easily made. The devil has the best jokes, and it's much easier to make evil interesting. It's much more interesting to make good interesting. It's much harder, and I think it's well worth it ... because at the end of the day, I really realized with this that if you believe in the subject matter, and if you really believe it's a story that needs to be told and that will benefit people, it really makes a difference to your day and getting out of bed.
