There were no postcards this week at Sweets Column, Winslow, IN 47598. Winslow Patoka River is still high with rain that we just had, and more rain will fall in the coming days. The really great thing that has begun last week is that the temps have risen in- to the 60s and 70s with nighttime temps of 40s and 50s. I guess spring has sprung, and I don't want it to be a doubter, but I have seen Easter in April before with winter weather. I hope not this time. Some have said we had our last frost, but the 15th isn't here. The flow- ering trees and bushes look beautiful sitting in the yards with those green clumps of grass. The white trees I be- lieve are cherry blossoms, the orange are Goldenrod and the Lilac and Tulip trees have buds that will bloom soon. The peonies are sprouting up and the daffodils are still in bloom. The ground cover of white flowers are blanketing the yards now, and we have seen the purple and purple-white beginning to spread. The little yellow flowers should come into bloom next. So if you decide to start mowing your lawn before Easter, you will cut up all the Easter egg hiding places. The colorful little flowers that look so great in the patch- es of yard will be gone. We looked out and saw the blue truck covered in red from the tree it was sitting under, and when I said covered, Norm swept out the bed. You couldn't even see where the bed was because of so many buds. There was a funny sight I saw the other morning as I was awoke by a thump on the window. A female car- dinal was trying its best to get inside the house through the window pane. It tried and tried, and I was sure it was going to break its beak. This has gone on for a month or so, and it doesn't give up so easy. The other day we had to make our way to Otwell Chamness station for a tire change. We got a spare, and when we finally got past the 40 m.p.h. limit, we felt the worst shimmy we had ever felt. We went back to the station and put on the spare. Now it is smooth sail- ing. Our spare is the bad tire until we find another one. The Easter egg hunts are beginning, so to all the kiddies, we hope you have loads of fun as you search for those eggs hid by the Easter bunny. To all the youngsters who are about to play the game of softball, have fun, fun, fun. It doesn't matter what the score may be if you had fun playing with your friends. The Winslow sports league will begin after the parade on April 27. The lights are about to dim on this week's ramblings of Winslow. Keep and eye on family and friends, slow down and enjoy all the wonders in your area, always smile, wave and say "hi" to everyone you see this week. BEARS Continued from page 5 What's worse is that now, as the fi- nal season of "Game of Thrones" be- gins, a tattoo artist friend of mine has just opened up her own shop with two massive dragon statues in the front yard. Has she no concern for her fel- low citizens? I can only hope that we, as a culture, have learned enough from the Targaryens to handle the dragons when they come — because, obviously, they are on their way. How could they not be? Everyone knows that decor summons. Luckily, it's not all bad. Sure, my lit- tle cove in the wild is about to become inundated with bears, dragons, kid- napping rabbits and leprechauns, and chimney-sliding T. rexes, but there are good forces at work here, too. At my house, at my son's school and in many other corners of our town, fairy gardens are thriving. Naturally, they, too, must be summoned. If "FernGul- ly" taught me anything, it's that fairies can take on some pretty huge beasts. I also feel confident that the singing fish above every grandpa's mantel will summon singing fish that will total- ly be on our side — perhaps singing such a great tune that the dragons and bears decide to have a dance-off rath- er than destroy the town. In these heated and contentious times, I hope we can all agree that for every evil creature-summoning piece of decor you place in your yard, you must place two other good-sum- moning items of greater or equal val- ue. If you must have a scorpion stat- ue by your koi pond, please add two lightsaber-wielding garden gnomes to keep the scorpions in line. For now, I will be refraining from going on picnics, will put padlocks on all our garbage bins and will remove all honey from my house. The bears are coming.
