The year is certainly chugging right along, as they usually do! Spring is springing though, and that is always a good thing. Warm weather and hopefully abundant sunshine will soon be upon us. This month's feature interview is with Ananya Birla. Ananya is a singer-songwriter based be- tween Mumbai, London and Los Angeles, and the first home- grown ar st to go Pla num with an English language track in India - something she has now done four mes, breaking the domi- nance of Bollywood music on the Indian music scene. Outside her music, Ananya is a strong believer in equality. She uses music to bring people from all backgrounds together and organizes music fes vals in Mumbai to benefit the mental health organisa on she founded, Mpower. Mpower was launched a er she ba led her own issues whilst at Oxford University and works towards dispelling the s gma associated with mental health illnesses and providing care in India where there's been li le to date. Her last two con- certs have brought together over 30 thousand people. She recent- ly spoke about Mpower at One Young World. She also promotes female em- powerment through her business Svatantra which helps women entrepreneurs in rural India grow their businesses and become fi- nancially independent. Svatantra means 'freedom' in Hindi. I hope you enjoy Ananya's inter- view and her story of achieve- ment and empowerment in a society that does not upli wom- en. See you next month in the May issue!
