Send the details to editor@sgstartimes.com BRIEFLY AARP Foundation Tax-Aide ready for changes A ARP Foundation Tax-Aide is a free program of tax preparation for low income taxpayers with emphasis on those over 55. You need not be a member of A ARP to par- ticipate, nor must you be over 55. The Foundation and IRS combine to organize and over- see the program, providing for annual training for vol- unteers in your community to assist in preparing your tax returns. Volunteer tax preparers are from all walks of life, training annually and certifying with the IRS to prepare "in scope" returns. In our district there are sites in Warrick, Vanderburgh, and Gibson Counties. Continuing through April 12, sites will be accepting sign-ups on their respective dates of operation. The taxpayer's responsibility is: • sign-up and be prepared to wait your turn • have all current year tax documents • have a photo ID of taxpayer and spouse, if indicated • and either both be prepared to sign consent or have written permission to sign for them. Gibson County sites: • Princeton Public Library: Thursdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. • Oakland City Library: Mondays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. • Fort Branch Fire Department: 2nd and 4th Tues- days 11 am. to 4 p.m. THIS WEEK Town council meetings set Fort Branch Town Council will meet March 20, April 17, May 15, June 19, July 17, Aug. 21, Sept. 18, Oct. 16, Nov. 20 and Dec. 18 this year at the Fort Branch Com- munity Center. Haubstadt Kindergarten registration is Wednesday South Gibson Kindergarten registration begins at: • Haubstadt Community School on Wednesday, March 20 from 8:30 -11 a.m. and 12:30 -3 p.m. Students age 5 years or older, on or before August 1, 2019 are eligible to register. Parents or guardians must bring a copy of your child's current immunizations, a cer- tified birth certificate and your child for testing. A birth certificate is required and can be received from the health department in the county of birth (Gibson County 385 -3831, Vanderburgh 435 -2400 and Warrick 897-6105). There is a fee charged for each copy and may be requested by mail if the fee is enclosed. A copy of the certified birth certificate is made and placed in the stu- dent's permanent school record. Registration for in town students is reserved for morn- ings. Registration for rural students is reserved for the afternoons. Please call the schools if you have any questions. La Leche League to meet March 20 A La Leche League meeting will be on Wednesday, March 20 at 10 a.m. at the Princeton Public Library, 124 S. Hart Street, in the basement meeting room. Chrys- tal Mehringer, La Leche League leader in Vanderburgh County, will lead the third series meeting. The topic will be "The Art of Breastfeeding and Overcoming Difficul- ties." All pregnant women, breastfeeding moms, and post breastfeeding moms and babies are invited to the meet- ing. Line dancing starts A beginner's line dancing program is being held on Thursday nights, beginning March 21 at 6 p.m. at the Knights of St. John in Haubstadt. No experience is necessary to participate in this ex- cellent form of fun exercise. No need to register. Donation of $5 is accepted. GCVT meets earlier Gibson County Visitors and Tourism will meet a half hour early, at 7:30 a.m. instead of 8 a.m. March 21 in the Princeton Train Depot. Beekeeping club coming to Vincennes University Gibson Center New to beekeeping? Or been beekeeping for a while and looking to network with fellow beekeepers? There's a new club offering workshops, monthly meetings with presentations from experienced beekeepers, and net- working/mentoring opportunities. Career Exploration Workshop visits workplaces A Career Exploration Workshop is set for March 25 - 29 for students in grades 7-12. March 25 explores health careers, March 26 is Civic Engagement, March 27 is Ag- ricultural and Animal Science, March 28 is trades and April 1 is more on health careers. THIS MONTH VFW Auxiliary Scholarship VFW Post 2714 Auxiliary would like to announce an opportunity for students in the Gibson County area. Through the Patriotic Art Contest, students can show their patriotism and creativity. The contest is open to high school students in grades 9 through 12 enrolled in a public, private or parochial high school or home study program. Students may enter either a two-dimensional or three-dimensional original artwork. Entry deadline is March 31. Lewis Day Celebration Dinner to be April 1 The 58th John L. Lewis Day Celebration Dinner will take place Monday, April 1 at noon (Oakland City Time) at the American Legion, 211 E. Washington St., Oak- land City. All retired miners and their spouses, as well as widows and widowers of retired miners, are welcome to attend. At 9 a.m., Black Lung testing will be given for coal miners. Treasure Hunt drawing slated for April 4 The VFW Post #2714 first Treasure Hunt drawing will be Thursday, April 4 at 7 p.m. Treasure Hunt will start out at $ 8,000, with increased side prizes, with a mini- mum of $100. DCS hosts Child Abuse Prevention Day Gibson County DCS will host Child Abuse Prevention Day on April 4 from 4-6 p.m. at Shelter #4 in Lafayette Park in Princeton with food, games, prizes and more. DHPA hosting annual photo contest The Indiana Division of Historic Preservation and Ar- chaeology (DHPA) is once again asking the public for photos for its annual Historic Preservation Month pho- to contest. DHPA works to preserve buildings and the built envi- ronment, and is looking for photos to celebrate that ef- fort. Specifically, the division is interested in photos of something that has been preserved, is in the process of being preserved, or desperately needs to be preserved. The subject in the photo must be in Indiana and at least 50 years old. The image must show something that was designed and/or built. Send an 8x10 inch matted image, along with the regis- tration form by April 5. The link for the registration form is below. Photographs can be color or black and white, and there is a separate category for digitally enhanced photos. The basic requirements are: • Images must be 8x10 inch prints, mounted or mat- ted on or with a white 11x14 matte board. • The registration form must be attached to each pho- to. • Limit of three photos per person. Pet pics with the Easter bunny planned Gibson County Animal Services will host pet pictures with the Easter bunny from noon to 3 p.m. April 6 at Ru- ral King. Sts. Gibson County GOP Lincoln Day Dinner As candidates have filed in their respective races, in the city and in town positions, we must be aware of who has filed and learn about the candidates as they get ready for the coming primary in May 2019. A good place to meet the candidates and current office holders is at the Gibson County GOP Lincoln Day Dinner. The Gibson County GOP Lincoln Day Dinner is on Saturday, April 13, with the program beginning at 6 p.m. CST. It will be at Dick Clark's Restaurant, 702 N. Prince St., in Princeton. Keynote speaker will be Tera Klutz, Indiana's State Au- ditor. She is the first Auditor of the State that is a Certi- fied Public Accountant that is serving as the state's Chief Financial Officer. Many of our elected officials will be attending and ma- ny party members who will be running in this year's pri- mary will be in attendance. This is an excellent opportu- nity for the Precinct Committeemen and Vice Commit- teemen to come and meet the candidates also. Fish dinners at the VFW April 19 Fish dinners served on Friday, April 19, sponsored by the VFW Auxiliary at the VFW Post #2714 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Patoka Lake Women's Wilderness Weekend is April 26-28 Learn outdoor skills while meeting other women dur- ing Patoka Lake's Women's Wilderness Weekend, April 26 -28. This is a women's-only event for ages 16 and older. The weekend will start at Patoka Lake Nature Cen- ter and include overnight camping Friday and Saturday nights. Events include depth archery lessons, kayaking, Dutch oven cooking, survival, wild edibles and medicine, wilderness first aid, basic fishing, firearms safety, trap shooting, rifle, boat operations, self-defense, wildlife tracking, beginner birding and more. Meals will be provided on Saturday and Sunday. Camp- ing will take place in the modern electric campgrounds. Advance registration is required by April 10.
