FEBRUARY 2013 FREEMAN & ENTERPRISE LAKE COUNTRY • Page 3A Delafield Brewhaus beer wins World Championship awards By Steve Van Dien Freeman Staff DELAFIELD – Mark Paliafito, John Kimpel, Jim Ellsworth and John Harrison are meltingly happy these days – or perhaps one should say maltingly hoppy. The first three men market Leisure Beer, which has been brewed by Delafield Brewhaus brewmaster Harrison for just over a year. And Leisure Beer's American Lager recently won two bronze medals in the World Beer Championships in Chicago. To celebrate, a large group of Brewhaus patrons were getting "Leisurized," as Ellsworth put it, during a customer appreciation event Jan. 17. "We're one for one," said Ellsworth, one of Leisure Boy LLC's owners, who's also known as Dr. Leisure. "It's the first Leisure Beer to be entered in the World Championships." "It's a nice validation of what we'd intended to create," said Paliafito, Leisure Boy LLC's chief executive officer. "We wanted a fairly light beer, but not as light as some domestic American beers. We wanted a little more flavor, without being overwhelming." "It was very challenging to come up with just the right mix," said Harrison. "I'd make some and take it to the guys, 'asking where do you think it's at now,' and 'what else does it need?' I'd add a little hops here, a little malt there, and keep experimenting." "John massaged it for about six months," said Paliafito. "He'd brew batches and we'd take them out in the marketplace to get feedback." At one point, Harrison said, he found just the right addition – some Vienna malt. "That gave this beer its signature malt character, not too heavy," he said. The result is very smooth, neither particularly sweet nor especially bitter, but superbly balanced. "And for me, this is the best kind of medal," said Harrison – who's won quite a few such awards during his career, as he gestured toward the Leisurized folks around the Brewhaus bar. "Getting medals is fine. But when a regular Joe comes in, puts his money down and says 'Give me a Leisure,' that's the best."
