February 9 - 15, 2019 10 KINGSPORT (TN) TIMES NEWS At this point of "Manifest," how do you view your character Michaela? She's a bit of a tragic character because she keeps trying and she keeps messing up, but her relationships are everything to her. I don't know what she would do without her brother or the love that was there with (her ex-fiance) Jared, so it's fun to explore that. What do you think about Michaela's relationships revealing so many different sides of her? The great thing is that a lot of these relationships are so awesome off-camera as well, it's such a safe space to explore the depth of each of them. With Josh (Dallas, who plays her brother Ben), he and I have become like brother and sister, so that dynamic is there. And with J.R. (Martinez, who portrays Jared), we've gotten really close, so for that friendship to translate on-screen as well is great. And with Victoria (Cartagena), who plays Lourdes (Michaela's former best friend who's now Jared's wife), she's just down-to-earth and game for anything. She's been a blast to play with. Do you enjoy the range of emotions that "Manifest" gives you to play? Oh, totally! We all joked when the show first started that if these characters existed in real life, they'd all be in the psych ward. You don't go through something like this and come out normal, so with what Michaela is experiencing on the screen, it's the simplest version of what really and truly happens. You can't be blubbering your way through every single episode, but these moments get the best of her, for sure. We see that with Ben, too, with his struggle with his family and trying to do the right thing there. Both characters meet their breaking points every once in a while. Melissa Roxburgh OF 'MANIFEST' ON NBC BY JAY BOBBIN BY GEORGE DICKIE In researching your character for "Pure," what surprised you about the Mennonites? I am very drawn to a lot of the ways in which the kinds of Mennonites we were studying lived their lives with a sense of community and interacting with and taking care of your neighbors and being self-sufficient and making a lot of the things that you use and rely on. That's sort of what drew me. I can't think of anything that surprised me about it. Reading some of the articles and watching some of the material, specifically about the drug-related instances, that was pretty darn surprising to me ... . Before I did the show, I had read an article about it and thought, "That's pretty crazy." And then when I signed onto the show, I did a lot more research and was like, "Oh my – wow. That's nuts." How did you like filming in Halifax, Nova Scotia? It's one of my favorite places in the world. I'm very lucky. When we were shooting the first season, one of my best friends lives there and my little sister was at university there so I had family and friends built in and I already knew the city. And there's something really special about the Maritimes. The people on the East Coast of Canada are just the kindest, most welcoming, down-to-earth people. ... It's just the best. I wouldn't recommend going in February just because you'll get blown into the ocean by a winter hurricane. But the people will still be very nice to you when they rescue you. And it's nice, too, because it's so accessible. You've got the ocean and the really rugged landscape and then for our show, just going out into the Annapolis Valley and having all that beautiful farm landscape, that's just the greatest. It was so nice to be able to be in nature that much.
