JENNA FISCHER BY JAY BOBBIN Regina Marie Fischer was born on March 7, 1974, in Fort Wayne, Ind. She began per- forming at age six, in an acting workshop conducted by her history-teacher mother. (Her younger sister, Emily, also is a teacher.) At a convention of TV critics last year, Fischer discussed how she lost a job she had – as a transcriber of interview sessions – by crashing an earlier convention's party for "Sat- urday Night Live," where she met and received acting advice from Molly Shannon. Fischer recalled, "She took me by the shoulders and she said, 'Never give up. That's what you need to do. You need to never give up.' " Fischer's breakthrough came with the role of Pam on NBC's American version of the comedy "The Office," and in playing the part, she drew upon the time she had spent as a recep- tionist and administrative assistant while pursuing her perform- ing dreams. TV success on "The Office" translated into movie roles for Fischer, with film credits including "Slither" (written and di- rected by her then-husband, James Gunn), "Blades of Glory," "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story," "The Promotion" and "Solitary Man." After "The Office," Fischer returned to series TV work in "You, Me and the Apocalypse," on which she also was an associate producer. She currently stars with Oliver Hudson in the ABC sitcom "Splitting Up Together," which counts Ellen DeGeneres among its executive producers. Devoted to the cause of animal rescue, Fischer now is mar- ried to screenwriter Lee Kirk. They have a son and a daugh- ter.
