Poplar Street, Petersburg NEWS BRIEFS Simmons benefit scheduled for Saturday A benefit breakfast and a chili meal are scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 9 to the benefit the family of Greg Sim- mons. They are being sponsored by the Winslow Fire Department. Simmons was a Winslow Town Council member who died of cancer while in office. The breakfast will be at the Winslow Fire Depart- ment building at the corner of Walnut and Union streets. It is $5 a person for pancakes, biscuits and gravy. It will run from 8:30 to 11 a.m. The chili meal is also $5 and will be available from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Desserts are available for $1 each. Purdue Extension to host seminar Feb. 12 There will be a Basic Tree Production/Home Growth Basics educational seminar, by Shawn Dickerson, City Arborist, Evansville, on February 12 at 6 p.m. EST at the Pike County 4-H Building. Gilboy named as new director of Petersburg Senior Center The Petersburg Senior Center has a new director. Donna Gilboy was hired on January 14 to replace retiring director Jack- ie Hamm. Gilboy said she has been working with seniors since 1990. She previously served as a certified activ- ities director at Amber Manor. She is also active in prison ministry. Gilboy said she hopes to expand ac- tivities at the Senior Center, located in the basement of the Pike County Courthouse. She said they are open Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and closed when the schools are closed for weather. She said they have quilting on Wednesdays and encouraged anyone interested in playing cards or just so- cializing to come in and get involved. They will also be having a break- fast on the first Wednesday of each month. Donna Gilboy Three arrested on meth and marijuana charges By Andy Heuring Three people were arrested on meth and marijuana charges follow- ing a traffic stop and the driver was also charged with OV WI. Clifford Donaldson, 34, was arrest- ed on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, (refusal) with a prior conviction in the last five years. He was also charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of parapherna- lia and possession of a schedule II con- trolled substance. Donaldson's passengers, Todd McCann, 45, and Tonya Snipes, 43, both of Petersburg, were arrested on charges of possession of methamphet- amine, possession of marijuana, pos- session of paraphernalia and posses- sion of a schedule II controlled sub- stance. Indiana State Trooper Chase Ea- ton said, on Saturday, January 26, he was patrolling on Highway 64 at about 9:45 p.m. when he noticed in his rear- view mirror a vehicle he met did not have working taillights. He turned around and stopped the vehicle, which turned onto CR 50 E. (Muren Road) and stopped. Trooper Eaton said when he talk- ed to Donaldson, who was driving, he noticed his eyes were red and watery, and his speech was slurred. Eaton could also smell the odor of alcohol. Trooper Eaton said when he asked Donaldson for his driver's license, Donaldson couldn't get his license out of his billfold, so he just handed Ea- ton his billfold. Then when he asked for the registration, Donaldson hand- ed him a stack of papers and said "it is in there." Donaldson, according to a probable cause affidavit, said he had four or five beers to drink at the Fireman's Ball. He failed field sobriety tests and tested almost double the legal limit for blood alcohol content on a porta- ble breath test. Eaton said Pike County Deputy's Paul Collier and Buck Seger arrived to assist and K9 Officer Bleck did a sniff test of the vehicle and indicat- ed on the passenger side door. Dur- ing a search of the vehicle, according to the affidavit, police found an Ad- vil container with a clear plastic bag in it that had a crystal-like substance in it and blue capsule-shaped pills. The pills were identified as amphet- amine/dextroamphetamine, a sched- ule II substance. The crystal-like sub- stance field tested positive for meth. They also found an aluminum can they believed to have been turned in- to a smoking device. When Trooper Eaton questioned Donaldson, Snipes and McCann, they all denied having any knowledge of the meth. Haycraft rises to rank of Eagle Scout Samuel Haycraft received the rank of Eagle Scout during a Sunday morning service at the First Unit- ed Methodist Church. He was presented the honors by Petersburg Mayor R. C. Klipsch. He also declared February 3 as Samuel Haycraft Day in Petersburg. Haycraft was also presented the Good Citizenship Award and Citizenship Medal.
