B-4 Sports Wednesday, Februar y 6, 2019 The Press-Dispatch 25th out of 32 competitors during preliminaries in the 100 -yard backstroke with a time of 58.84 seconds after placing first in the section- al finals with a time of 58.28 seconds, and 29th out of 32 competitors during prelimi- naries in the 200 -yard indi- vidual medley with a time of 2:13.70 after placing first in the sectional finals with a time of 2:12.82. Going into this year's state meet's preliminaries – which will be held on Friday, Feb. 8 at the Indiana Univer- sity Natatorium on the IU- PUI campus in Indianapolis – Bohnert is seeded 25th in the 100 -yard backstroke and 27th in the 200 -yard individ- ual medley. The top 16 swim- mers in each event advance to Saturday's finals. "We know where we're at in the IM," Mike Bohnert said. "I mean, it's a tough race, but we know com- ing back in for the back- stroke, we're hoping to hit that top 16. And, if not, as long as we get close to it, if we keep moving down, our time keeps getting better, we're doing good slowly but surely. When she gets to col- lege, hopefully it just contin- ues forward." "I'm going to swim as fast as I can, just realizing that it's my last state meet, and see what I can do," Natalie Bohnert said. "I think next week our plan is to taper, just to see what I can actually do at state. I've never cut (time) at a state meet, and I've nev- er tapered for a state meet. So, we'll just see what we can get done." Natalie Bohnert also teamed up with sophomores Charlotte Dudenhoeffer and Jenna Meyer and freshman Emma McKinney to place fifth in the 200 -yard med- ley relay with a season-best time of 2:02.40 – and with Dudenhoeffer, Meyer and freshman Madison Riley to place fourth in the 400 -yard freestyle relay with a sea- son-best time of 4:17.15. During preliminar- ies, Bohnert, Dudenhoef- fer, McKinney and Mey- er placed fourth in the 200 -yard medley relay with a season-best time of 2:03.54, beating their previous sea- son-best time of 2:03.68, while the team of Bohnert, Dudenhoeffer, Meyer and Riley placed fourth in the 400 -yard freestyle relay with a time of 4:21.83. In addition, Meyer placed second in diving with a sea- son-best 11-dive score of 341.05 points to advance to the regional diving meet for the second straight year, while freshman Emma McKinney placed eighth with an 11-dive score of 262.20 points. Jasper senior Zoe Biggs placed first in the event with an 11-dive score of 341.05 points while Jasper junior Olivia Biggs placed third with an 11-dive score of 305.75 points. "I was hoping to get sec- ond place again, because the competition was the same it was at PAC – we just had Jas- per this time," said Meyer, who placed first in the event during the PAC Champion- ship two weeks earlier with an 11-dive score of 321.10 points. "So I was just work- ing to stay consistent." The top eight divers at the regional meet – which was held on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at Bloomington North – will advance to the state finals on Saturday, Feb. 9. During last year's re- gional diving meet, Meyer placed 16th out of 20 com- petitors. Meyer is hoping that hav- ing competed at the region- al diving meet as a freshman a year ago will be an advan- tage for her this year. "I feel like I've already learned a lot from it," Mey- er said. "It was overwhelm- ing last year, and now I know what to expect. I'll probably perform better this year, too." "She's getting stronger," Mike Bohnert said of Mey- er. "Her degree of difficul- ty's getting tougher, so she's adding points through that. Every year, she just keeps building on it. Hopefully, maybe she can work her way out of regional to state after that." Also placing in the sec- tional finals in individual events for the Lady Char- gers were: • McKinney, after finish- ing fourth in the 100 -yard breaststroke during prelim- inaries with a season-best time of 1:16.80 – beating her previous season-best time of 1:18.61 – placed fifth with a season-best time of 1:16.71. • Dudenhoeffer, after fin- ishing eighth in the 500 -yard freestyle during preliminar- ies with a personal record time of 6:22.62 – beating her previous PR time of 6:22.80 – placed seventh with a PR time of 6:17.41. "He was pret- ty nervous, and you could tell, but we got the win and will move on to next week." Three other Pike Cen- tral wrestlers also compet- ed in the regional meet. In the opening round of the 132-pound weight class, junior Brandon Goeppner, the No. 6 seed, lost by pin to Terre Haute South Vigo junior Gabriel Recknor, the No. 3 seed, in 0 :57 to end the season with a won-loss record of 11-12. "It would have been nice to get a few more guys out, but it's a very competitive regional," McCain said. "That first match decides whether your season con- tinues or ends, so there is a lot of pressure." "I'm proud of all our guys," McCain added. "They put in a hard week of preparation. It just wasn't meant to be for a few of them this year. What's ex- citing is all these guys are back next year. I plan on sit- ting down with the team and discussing our goals for next year and what it's going to take to achieve them. We have to get these guys to spend more time in the weight room." Greer, who will be mak- ing his first semi-state ap- pearance, is seeded 10th and will battle Colum- bus North senior Morgan Smith, the No. 7 seed, in a first-round match-up. The winner will advance to a quarterfinal bout against either North Posey senior Kameron Kendall, the No. 2 seed, or Monrovia soph- omore Ben Dalton, the No. 15 seed. The top four wrestlers in each weight class at the semi-state meet will ad- vance to the state finals, which will be held on Fri- day, Feb. 15, and Saturday, Feb. 16, at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. "I'm glad he will get to experience the feel of semi- state," McCain said. "It can play on a guy's nerves, be- ing in front of a crowd like that under the lights. He's asked that this be the hard- est week of practice he's ev- er put in. He wants to be prepared. It's refreshing to have a kid come to you and request that." PCMS 8th grade girls knocked out of South Gibson Invite with 40-12 loss to Tecumseh Karsyn Flowers hit four three-pointers while scor- ing a game-high 17 points to lead Tecumseh to a 40 - 12 victory over Pike Cen- tral in the semifinals of the South Gibson Girls' Mid- dle School Basketball Invi- tational on Thursday, Jan. 31, at Fort Branch Commu- nity School. Tecumseh outscored the Lady Chargers 8 -2 in the third period and 4-1 in the fourth period to extend its margin of victory to 28 points. "Tecumseh jumped out big early," Pike Central eighth grade coach Eric Knight said. "Once Tecum- seh got that big early lead, they kept it the whole game and never slowed down." "Offensively, we had good looks out of the of- fense, but we could not find the bucket," Knight added. "Defensively, we played a little behind, chasing girls. Tecumseh had a re- ally good ball handler and point guard. She broke our traps and was able to sur- vey the floor and find the open girls. If we backed off her, she hit the outside shot." Liberty Taylor led the Lady Chargers with four points while Kahle Young added three points. Jaylynn Capehart and Keena Young tossed in two points each while Delaney Welch net- ted one point. "We have a week now to improve on some fun- damentals and get in the gym and find the way to get back to winning," Knight said. "It's there. We just have to go get it as a team."
