Joseph Anthony Mantegna was born on Nov. 13, 1947, in Chi- cago – a city that has had great meaning for him throughout his career, right from the start when he played in two bands, one of which included members who went on to form the pop-music group Chicago. After studying acting, Mantegna made his stage debut in "Hair." His movie debut would have been in the musical "Xanadu," but his role was cut, though he's still listed in the credits. However, he built his film cred in such pictures as "The Money Pit," "Three Amigos," "Weeds," "Suspect" and (as part of his association with writer David Mamet) "House of Games." Mantegna's theater work has included "Glengarry Glen Ross," which earned him a Tony Award. "Speed-the-Plow" is among his other stage credits. Films made by Mantegna during the 1990s include The Godfather, Part III," "Bugsy," "Body of Evidence," "Searching for Bobby Fischer," "Baby's Day Out," "Forget Paris," "Eye for an Eye" and "Up Close and Personal." Since 2007, Mantegna has starred as BAU Agent David Rossi on the CBS drama series "Criminal Minds," also direct- ing episodes of the show each season. He also has hosted the Outdoor Channel documentary show "Gun Stories," and he has an ongoing voice role as mobster Fat Tony on Fox's "The Sopranos."
