Poplar Street, Petersburg NEWS BRIEFS Oakland City Library hosts Wildlife Photographer, Ron Young January 15 Oakland City Columbia Township Public Library will be hosting Ron Young, an active wildlife photogra- pher on January 15, at 5 p.m. in the Li- brary meeting room. Young will pres- ent his wildlife photography and shares the stories behind them. He will also provide tips on how to get the best pic- ture. This program is for those interest- ed in wildlife as well as those interest- ed in photography. No reservation re- quired and seating will be first come, first served. Oakland City Library host Jenny Ridao, 'Cooking for One or Two' Jan. 17 Ever think why bother to cook when it's just yourself? Jenny Ridao with the Purdue Extension Office will show you it's easier than you think when she presents Cooking for One or Two at the Oakland City-Columbia Township Pub- lic Library on Jan. 17 at noon. Medic First Aid® Refresher with AED, Jasper – Medic First Aid® Re- fresher with AED (Automated External Defibrillators) is a basic training course in emergency care, designed for use in the business/industrial setting. This refresh- er course reviews the primary and second- ary essential skills of patient care that stu- dents learned in the initial training. These skills allow the graduates to function with one consistent set of priorities in a medi- cal emergency. The 4-H Youth Development program is the world's largest youth development and empowerment organization, reaching mil- lions of youth within thousands of commu- nities. The 4-H program is a component of the Cooperative Extension system, which extends resources from land-grant univer- sities to local communities. 4-H is an educational youth organization that belongs to the members, their families, and other interested adults who serve as vol- unteers. Volunteers and parents assist 4-H members in developing life skills through meaningful programs and opportunities. Professional leadership for the Pike Coun- ty 4-H program is provided by staff of Pur- due Extension. Youth enrolled in grades 3-12 are able to enroll in numerous projects and take advan- tage of many 4-H opportunities as 4-H mem- bers for a yearly $20 program fee. Youth enrolled in grades K-2 are able to sign up as a "Mini" for only a $5 yearly pro- gram fee! WHY SHOULD I JOIN? A recent gallop poll showed: • More than 40 percent of kids feel unpre- pared to lead because they lack confidence and experience leading. • 80 percent of young people feel confi- dence is the skill they lack most, citing it as a critical skill strong leaders possess. • More than 45 percent of kids believe that programs to build confidence and be- ing encouraged to help lead regularly would help them grow as leaders. The 4-H program inspires confidence, de- velops responsibility and teaches compas- sion – critical traits of a great leader, wheth- er leading in their personal life, their com- munity or their career. PIKE COUNTY 4-H HOSTS FREE PANCAKE ROUNDUP THIS SATURDAY The Pike County 4-H is holding a free Pancake Roundup breakfast this Sat- urday Jan. 12, to enroll all Pike County Youth grades K-12. The free breakfast will be for the whole family and includes all-you-can-eat pancakes. Pike County 4- H has many exciting plans for this year including camps, scholarships, special workshops, new clubs and projects and the Pike County 4-H Fair. The fair will be Sunday, July 21 through Saturday, July 27. Enrollment for the en- tire year is $20 per child in grades 3-12, or $5 per child grades K-2. The free break- fast will be at the Pike County 4-H Build- ing from 7-11 a.m. and is open house style. The tour is self-guided and runs from 1 to 3 p.m. It will have six outdoor shore- line stops, each staffed by experienced birders who will assist attendees in view- ing eagles and other birds through spot- ting scopes. Tour attendees can also get an up-close look at a bald eagle and several other rap- tors at a bonus indoor tour stop featur- ing live education birds from Hardy Lake. Advance registration is $5 for adults ($ 3 for children) and is available through Jan. 24 by calling 812-837-9546 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Walk-up registration is $7 for adults ($4 for children) at the Paynetown Activity Center on Jan. 26 beginning at 12:30 p.m. All attendees must check in at the Paynetown Activity Center to pick up a tour map and get their event badges, which must be worn in a visible location while visiting tour stops. The Paynetown Activity Center is lo- cated next to the swimming beach inside Paynetown State Recreation Area, 4850 S. State Road 446, Bloomington. Admis- sion to Paynetown SR A is free during the winter months.
