B-2 Sports Wednesday, Januar y 9, 2019 The Press-Dispatch rial senior Cam Saulman, sandwiched around a free throw by Hanselman, left Pike Central holding a 23- 19 advantage, a basket and a three-pointer by Benson extended the Chargers' lead to 28 -19 with under a minute remaining in the first half. A basket by Trojans soph- omore Coltin Page and a free throw by Saulmon pulled Wood Memorial to within six points – at 28 -22 – at the halftime intermission. The Chargers would score the first four points of the second half – on back-to- back baskets by Gorby and Holder – to stretch their lead to 32-22 with 6:08 left in the third quarter. Following an exchange of baskets by Bartley and Hold- er, the Trojans went on a 6 - 1 scoring run – powered by two free throws by junior Lo- gan Keeler and two baskets by Schwomeyer – to close to within 35 -30 with 2:38 re- maining in the third quarter. However, a three-point- er by Scott – off of an assist by Holder – and a basket by Benson stretched Pike Cen- tral's lead to 40 -30 going in- to the fourth period. The Trojans would pull to within five points – at 48 -43 – with 4:02 left in the final quarter before a free throw and a three-pointer by Scott stretched Pike Central's lead to 52-43 with 3:09 re- maining. Then, with the Chargers holding a 54-45 lead after Scott hit two free throws with 1:17 left in the con- test, two three-pointers and four free throws by Bartley sparked a 10 -4 scoring run that cut Pike Central's lead to 58 -55 with 9.1 seconds to play. A fter the Chargers turned the ball over on the ensuing inbounds play, Wood Me- morial immediately called a timeout with 7.8 seconds re- maining. When play resumed, a shot by Parke was off the mark, and a jump ball on the rebound went to Pike Central. Holder, fouled with 0.1 seconds left, hit two free throws to cap off the Char- gers' five-point victory. "I feel like we've been in this situation several times this year," an elated Elliott said afterward. "We've had a little bit of a lead. Now, this one happened a little bit lat- er in the game, but when we've had the lead and some things started not going our way, unfortunately, we were kind of folding." "Tonight, that started happening, and, instead, we came together," Elliott con- tinued. "We had that next play mentality. We didn't get stuck on the play before and, you know, we just went and made the next one – and we came out on top." For the game, Pike Cen- tral hit 17 of 31 field goal at- tempts – a 54.8 percent av- erage – and made 18 of 27 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 16 times. From beyond the three- point arc, the Chargers made a season-high eight tries out of 13 attempts. "I think tonight we were really doing a nice job of playing inside-out," Elliott said. "We were attacking the basket, and we shot 27 free throws and only 13 threes. I'm trying to get them to understand that playing in- side-out is our best brand of basketball, and those drive- and-kick threes – we hit eight of them tonight, that's the most we've hit all sea- son." "It's one of those things where we were just being ag- gressive to the rim," Elliott added. "And good things happen when you do that." Bartley, after being held to 10 points during the first three quarters, hit four of five field goal attempts, in- cluding three three-point- ers, and made eight of nine tries from the free throw line while netting 19 fourth-quar- ter points to finish with 29 for the game. Prior to the fourth period, the 6 -foot-3 Bartley – who al- so grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds – had made just four of 14 field goal attempts and was 2-for-6 from the free throw line. "It was a matter of time, I think," Elliott said of Bart- ley's fourth-quarter offen- sive outburst. "I think we did a really good job on him, re- ally, the whole game. But, you know, he's a very good player. He's very talented. He's played a lot of basket- ball. When the ball's in your hands as much as it is in his, it's just a matter of time be- fore some shots are going to start falling." Keeker and Page added eight points each for the Tro- jans, who slipped to 3-8. For the game, Wood Me- morial made 17 of 42 field goal attempts – a 40.5 per- cent average – and hit 18 of 29 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over four times. Pike Central will return to action on Friday, Jan. 11, when the Chargers will play at Heritage Hills. On Satur- day, Jan. 12, they will travel to Boonville. "We've got a tough Heri- tage Hills team," Elliott said. "They're sitting at the top of the PAC – they're very tal- ented – and then Boonville on Saturday, so it's a chal- lenge for us. But I think we've shown what our kids can do when we play togeth- er, when we compete. So, you know, we're ready for it."
