C-2 Church Wednesday, December 5, 2018 The Press-Dispatch Continued in next column Continued in next column Continued from page 1 While visions of fam- ilies danced in their heads....Give the gift of your time and your love this holiday season, adopt a shelter dog or cat. This week, PAWS is featuring a very spe- cial hound named Bran- dy, who has only lived at PAWS a short time and has won the heart of all who know her. She is ex- tremely laid back, seldom makes a peep, housebro- ken and likes to just chill on her blanket in the pup- py room at PAWS. Brandy gets along with everyone, dogs and cats alike. She walks well on a leash and would make a very loving companion. She is 2 years old, has soft, short, black and tan fur. To adopt Brandy, call 812-354-9894. Remember the shel- ter animals while your out shopping. We can al- ways use chews, canine kabobs and Temptations for the cats. Mary said; "My soul glo- rifies the Lord and my spir- it rejoices in God my Sav- ior" (Luke 1:46 -47). This was Mary's song to God. During the First World War on Christmas Eve, the battlefield was strangely qui- et. As the soft snow fell, the thoughts of the young men were of home and their fam- ilies. Softly one lad began to hum "Silent Night." Others took up the chorus until the trenches resounded with the Christmas song. When they finished they were astonished to hear the song echoing from the trenches across so-man's land. In their own tongue the other soldiers sang "Si- lent Night." That night they were thinking of The Prince of Peace, the Christ of Christ- mas. How different this world would be if we could unite to- gether around that "Holy In- fant so tender and mild." Earth can be as Heaven with Christ. Discord can be as peace when Christ is near. Midnight gloom can be trans- formed into noonday bright- ness when He abides with us. If at any time you have no church to attend, feel free to join us for services. Your pres- ence will be greatly appreci- ated and I am sure you will receive God blessings. May God bless each and everyone. Let us not forget the reason for the season—Jesus. He prayed for his enemies while on the cross. He prayed before He raised Lazarus to life. He prayed when he instituted the Lord's supper. And the list goes on. John Manges, Minister day youth group at 6:30 p.m. "Give thanks in all circum- stances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you" (I Thessalonians 5:18). What is your favorite part of the holiday season? Is it the family gatherings or the time off? Is it festiv- ities and the decorations? Is it the food? Many of us love the holiday season, thanks- giving through Christmas, for all those reasons above. However, for some of us, the holiday season is not so cheerful anymore. Some of these traditions may not be the same anymore, when our tables are miss- ing those close to us. Some this year may be faced with unsettling and life changing news around the holidays. My prayer however, is that we hold firm to Paul's charge to give thanks in all circum- stances, and that we remem- ber the Joy we have in Christ and that through him God is near to us in all of life's cir- cumstances. Everyone welcome. DJ Bryant, Pastor Church of God FIRST CHURCH OF GOD 2135 East Main Street Petersburg Sunday morning service at Traylor Union Church 4107 N. CR 1000 E. A fter a while, you see a lot, and hear a lot, and you are ex- posed to many things. I have shared with many over the years that if you pay atten- tion in any church, the Holy Ghost will show you what to do and what not to do. He is still the best of all teachers. I'm certainly not saying that I'm smarter than anyone, I am not, but I do want to pay attention to what is being said and done. I have been blessed in my life to have sat under some very wise and godly men who have taught me many things, and one thing above all is absolutely certain, on- ly the Blood of Jesus can take away sins and save any soul. Nothing, and I mean nothing, can be added to it. There is no man on the face of this Earth that can save your soul or forgive sins. This is a spiritual work, not a physical work. They are as stubble before the wind, and as chaff that the storm carrieth away" ( Job 21:17- 18). The day was beautiful when two boys went for a walk into a dense forest. So taken were they with inter- esting things that they gave little thought to their where- abouts until, coming to a clearing, they saw the un- mistakable signs of an ap- proaching storm. With a sudden desire to re- turn to home and safety, the boys realized they were lost. That fact struck fear to their hearts. They were lost, yes, but no more lost than they had been for the past hour or two while they were enjoying the things about them. It was the storm that brought them to their senses. God, in His mercy, may permit storms of trouble, tri- al and sorrow into formerly peaceful and satisfied lives to bring lost souls to know their lostness. Lord, send the storms where needed— J.W. But the Fa- ther in heaven would have never asked or sent His Son to Earth to die for something that has to die anyway. It is appointed unto man once to die; then the judgment. Christ Himself will prove to everyone one day that this is the only true doctrine. It certainly isn't true because I say so, but because God set it in motion and the Bible declares it to be true. What would it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul? As the old song says, "What can wash away my sins, nothing but the blood of Jesus." He is just a breath away.
