The Press-Dispatch Sports Wednesday, December 5, 2018 B- 3 A pair of three-pointers by Pike Central junior guard Ethan Scott – sandwiched around a trey by Carey – cut the Tigers' lead to 9 -6 with 4:07 remaining in the open- ing period. Princeton answered by scoring eight straight points – on two baskets by Carey and one basket each by Zack Dove and sophomore guard Dominic Hardiman – to open up a 17-6 advantage with 2:56 left in the opening period. "I thought, in the half court, our defense was pret- ty solid, really, for the most part," Elliott said. "It was just their press turned us over and we would let one, two, three, four turnovers kind of happen in a row, and we wouldn't slow down." A fter baskets by senior forward Joey Church and ju- nior forward Mario Fields fueled a 4-1 scoring run that pulled Pike Central to within 18 -10, the Tigers scored nine straight points – six by Matt Dove and three by Zach Dove – to stretch their lead to 27- 10 with 7:14 left in the sec- ond period. Eight points by Wilkerson would subsequently spark a 15 -8 scoring run that extend- ed Princeton's lead to 42-18 at the end of the first half. The Tigers stretched their lead to 35 points twice during the third quarter – at 59 -24 and 61-26 – before Pike Cen- tral scored the first six points of the fourth period – on bas- kets by Church, Scott and ju- nior forward Noah Whann – to close to within 61-32 with 5:33 remaining. Princeton, however, would score the game's final 13 points – including nine by Zack Dove – to finish off the Chargers. Scott paced Pike Central with 10 points while Whann and senior guard Christian Benson tossed in six points each. Church (4 points), se- nior guard Judah Leathco (3 points), Fields (2 points) and senior guard Draven Huff (1 points) rounded out the scor- ing for the Chargers. Senior Austin Holder grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. For the game, Pike Cen- tral made 14 of 50 field goal attempts – a 28.0 percent av- erage – and hit one of three tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 15 times. Princeton took advantage of the Chargers' turnovers, 10 of which the Tigers con- verted into a total of 20 points on the offensive end. "When we weren't scared and ran out sets and moved the basketball, I thought we got a lot of looks in the half court," Elliott said. "I think, man-to-man, their size kind of hurt them a little as far as guarding us because they had to chase some guards around the floor. But it was one of those things where the trapping and the pressure re- ally got to us early." For the game, Princeton made 27 of 56 field goal at- tempts – a 48.2 percent aver- age – and hit 15 of 19 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over seven times. In the junior varsity con- test, sophomore forward Ethan Cochren scored a game-high 14 points and ju- nior guard Colin Holzmeyer added 10 points to lead Princ- eton to a 40 -24 win over Pike Central. Junior center Colin Craig paced the Chargers with eight points. Sopho- more forward Jaden Guth and sophomore guard Sean Hanselman added five points each. The Chargers do not have another game scheduled un- til Tuesday, Dec. 18, when they will play at Southridge. "We have a lot of good teams coming up; the PAC is very strong this year," El- liott said. "This is an oppor- tunity for us to step back and watch some film, and teach, and let these guys learn. They've seen a little bit of it now and they just have to step back and learn." "I think we're going to get better as the year goes," El- liott added. "Out of the five starters, Benson's really the only one that had ever seen the varsity floor, so this is really the rest of the team's fourth game. So the learning curve is going to take a lit- tle bit. But I think we can go back and we're going to fo- cus on some team-bonding things and try to take them and do some fun stuff but, at the same time, I think we can get a lot better."
