Leah Vukmir, R-Brookfield, conceded the race for U.S. Senate to her opponent, incumbent Tammy Baldwin, to a disappointed crowd at her election night party in The Ingleside Hotel ballroom on Tuesday. "We ran as hard a race as you can in Wisconsin," Vukmir said, her two kids standing by her side on stage. "We ran as underdogs, and we knew that all along." Using exit polls, mul- tiple news agencies called the race for Baldwin, a Democrat, only five minutes after polls closed. Vukmir gave her concession speech about an hour later, when actual voter tallies showed her behind by about 10 points. Baldwin, one of the most liberal mem- bers of Congress, led Vukmir in fundrais- ing and the polls throughout the race. Vukmir campaigned as the underdog and is a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump. As Baldwin began her victory speech on live TV, Elvis Presley's "A Little Less Conversation" blasted over the speakers to drown out Baldwin's words. "I'm disappointed, but I'm still hopeful," said Chris Gugel, a Sheboygan man whose son worked on Vukmir's campaign. Vukmir has served on state Legislature since 2002, and considered one of the Senate's most conservative members. Vukmir held a joint election party with Gov. Scott Walker on Tuesday and Attorney General Brad Schimel held his election party in the ballroom across the hall, where he played the bass in his rock band while waiting for election results. Tony Vanderwal, a former truck driver, entered the election party an hour ahead of doors opening. He said he was enthusiastic about Republican turnout. Carpenter Bill Schultz came to Vukmir's election party in the hopes that he could watch the Republicans lose. "We backed Walker in the beginning, but he screwed us," Schultz said. "Anybody who makes under $100,000 and voted Republican should chop their fingers off."
