Kenzie Rudolph photo Otwell duo arrest on OVWI, marijuana charges By Andy Heuring An Otwell man and woman were arrested when police stopped the car they were in for going left of center. James A. Wilhite, 33, of 9582 E. SR 56, Otwell, was arrested on a charge of op- erating a vehicle while in- toxicated, controlled sub- stance and possession of paraphernalia. His passen- ger, Cassondra Ball, 29, of the same address, was ar- rested on a charge of pos- session of paraphernalia. Petersburg Police Cpl. Jared Simmons said, at 12:01 a.m. Sunday, he saw a black Ford Taurus, driv- ing east on Highway 356 in Petersburg, go left of the center line three times and cross the fog line before he stopped it. He talked to Wilhite, who was driving and claimed the front end of his car had a bad pull in the front end. Cpl. Simmons said Wil- hite failed three of four field sobriety tests. Pike County Deputy Sheriff Buck Seger arrived with K9 Officer Bleck, who in- dicated the presence of drugs near the passenger side door. Cpl. Simmons' reports states Wilhite admitted to smoking marijuana and that his passenger, Ball, had also smoked marijua- na that day. Cpl. Simmons said during a search of the vehicle, officers found a metal "one hitter smoking device" with burnt mari- juana residue in it. He said they also found two elec- tronic smoking devices that "resembled smoking devices" he had seen be- fore that use THC oil. He said one was found on the passenger side and the other on the driver's side of the car. Simmons' report states Ball told him it was a THC oil device. Ball was taken to the Pike County Jail and Wil- hite was taken to the Da- viess Community Hospi- tal, where he tested posi- tive for marijuana. When Cpl. Simmons was driving Wilhite and Ball from the scene of their arrest, he saw a vehicle parked in the intersection of Highway 356 and CR 300 E., then noticed a man sit- ting on the road side. BENSON ARRESTED ON OVWI, PUBLIC INTOX. CHARGES Deputy Seger said he responded to the scene and found the car and No- ah Benson, 20, of 394 S. Glezen West St., Peters- burg, standing about 30 yards from his car. Deputy Seger said when he asked Benson what he was doing, Benson said his uncle had climbed a tree and he was trying to get him down. Accord- ing to Deputy Seger, Ben- son then pointed at a util- ity pole and said his uncle was up the pole. "He's right up there." He also said he thought he was in Glezen. Deputy Seger said Ben- son admitted he had used methamphetamine about two hours earlier and he had driven to this location. According to Seger's report, while Benson was being transported to the Pike County Jail, he be- gan screaming hysterical- ly and when Deputy Jason McKinney asked him what was wrong, he said they had just run over a 20 ft. python in the road. He was preliminarily charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated and public intoxication. VELPEN MAN STOPPED FOR SUSPENDED LICENSE, ARRESTED FOR OVWI A Velpen man was ar- rested after police noticed he was driving on a sus- pended license early Hal- loween evening. Darrel Kelsey, 55, of 9513 E. Walnut St., Velpen, was arrested on a prelimi- nary charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, controlled substance (re- fusal). Indiana State Trooper Chase Eaton said he ran a license plate check on Kelsey's vehicle and no- ticed Kelsey's license was suspended. He stopped Kelsey and immediately noticed signs of impair- ment, including uncontrol- lable mouth movements. Kelsey failed field sobriety tests and refused a chem- ical test. He was taken to the Pike County Jail. net edition yeah, it's that fast! Z M www.PressDispatch.net/Subscribe It's The Press-Dispatch. No matter where you live. Delivered every Wednesday morning!
