B-2 Sports Wednesday, November 7, 2018 The Press-Dispatch The Lady Panthers pulled to within 34-26 early in the third quarter on a basket by sophomore Catie Shane be- fore a basket by Horrall and a pair of free throws by Nel- son extended Pike Central's lead to 38 -26 with 5:58 left in the period. The Lady Chargers would then go more than five min- utes without scoring, a stretch during which Pike Central turned the ball over four times and missed eight field goal attempts, as Evans- ville Reitz – on baskets by Shane and sophomore Lily Beyers – pulled to within 38 - 30 with 1:12 remaining in the third quarter. However, a put-back by Horrall and a three-point play by junior guard Lauren Vaughn stretched the La- dy Chargers' lead back into double digits – at 43-30 – with 7:33 left in the fourth period. Pike Central would stretch its lead to as many as 20 points – at 54-34 – before Lady Panthers senior Oliv- ia Sullivan hit the second of two free throw attempts to end the scoring with 2.6 sec- onds remaining. Nelson led both teams in scoring with 14 points. In ad- dition to Powell's 10 points, Horrall and Vaughn netted eight points each. "She air-balled a free throw and I think it bugged her a lit- tle bit, but she bounced back," McCutchan said of Vaughn, who made two of seven field goal attempts and was 3-for-5 at the charity stripe. "She's going to be one of our top players. We're going to need her to have a good year for us if we're going to have a good year." Horrall also had a game- high five steals while Nel- son and Vaughn had three each. Senior guard Becca Crow grabbed a team-high six rebounds while fresh- man Mallory Hickey had five rebounds. For the game, Pike Cen- tral made 16 of 41 field goal attempts – a 39.0 percent av- erage – and hit 17 of 24 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 23 times. "In the first half, we moved the ball very well," Mc- Cutchan said. "They went a lot of zone. They mixed it up quite a bit in the second half. They put a lot of pressure on the ball and we kind of fal- tered. We struggled with it a little bit." "That's something we know we have to work on," McCutchan added. "We'll just grow from it. We'll put some drills in to get better at it, but, overall, I don't want to com- plain too much on a 19 -point win." Beyers led Evansville Re- itz with seven points while Shane added six points and a team-high six rebounds. Gro- ben and junior Kyla Terry – who led the Lady Panthers in steals with four – both netted four points. For the game, Evansville Reitz made 13 of 50 field goal attempts – a 26.0 percent av- erage – and hit seven of 11 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 28 times. In the junior varsity con- test, Hunt scored a game- high 16 points while Powell and sophomore Hailey Park- er added eight points each as Pike Central defeated Evans- ville Reitz 44-25. Sopho- mores Gracie Jones and Kail- ee Mann and freshman So- phie Carnahan added four points each. Freshman Al- yssa Haynes paced the Lady Panthers with 11 points. Ed Cahill photo PCMS 8th grade girls' basketball team routs Loogootee, 39-12 The Pike Central Middle School eighth grade girls' basketball team improved to 2-0 with a 39 -12 victory over visiting Loogootee on Monday, Nov. 5. Chloe Williams scored a game-high 14 points to lead the Lady Chargers. Jaylnn Capehart netted six points while Liberty Taylor, Kah- le Young and Keena Young added four points each. Delaney Welch had three points while Tiffany Artea- ga and Jasmine Leighty chipped in with two points apiece. "Chloe Williams, Lib- erty Taylor and Jaylynn Capehart all three had a huge game," Pike Central head coach Eric Knight said. "Their presence in the paint was great. Once the ball was passed to the paint, there was no turning back. They took over in the paint. We have been work- ing on going harder and more physical in the pain and they all three came to play that way." The Lady Charger took a 10 -0 lead into the second quarter before Loogootee rallied, outscoring Pike Central 8 -6 to close to with- in 16 -8 at halftime. However, Williams scored five points and Tay- lor added four more in the third period as the Lady Chargers outscored Loo- gootee 15 -4 to extend their lead to 31-12. Pike Central held the La- dy Lions scoreless in the fourth period, when Artea- ga, Capehart, Leighty and Williams scored two points each. "Loogootee played a 1-2- 2 zone against us and was a pretty tall and long team," Knight said. "Ball move- ment improved a bunch for us and it gave us multiple open shots and drives once we got into the offense." "We started out in a full- court press and also tried to run and gun against this team," Knight added. "The girls did a pretty good job of running, but we still have some little things to work on on the full court press. With 11 girls and doing run and gun, we subbed a lot tonight and I was pretty proud that the momentum didn't slow down any." Knight said that, once again, he subbed freely in the backcourt, starting the game with the Young twins. "The twins got the start for me on top and did a re- ally good job of defend- ing the ball," Knight said. "This rattled Loogootee and slowed them down to stop them from getting in the flow. Kennedy Willis, Tiffany Arteaga and Del- aney Welch were also run in and out as top defenders and ball handlers. Overall, we looked a lot better and a lot more confident." Pike Central will host North Posey on Thursday, Nov. 8, before traveling to Washington on Tuesday, Nov. 13, and to South Spen- cer on Thursday, Nov. 15. "This is a very fun group and also a group that I ex- pect to improve and get bet- ter every game and every practice," Knight said. "I can see it in their eyes that they want to be that team that everyone is gunning for."
