Ed Cahill photo The Pike Central High School girls' golf team placed first in a three-team meet hosted by North Knox at the Bicknell Coun- try Club on Thursday, Aug. 9. The Lady Chargers had a team score of 210. South Knox was second with a 223 while North Knox was third with a 230. Senior Natalie Bohnert led Pike Central with a nine-hole score of 37 while junior Hadley Holder and freshman Carissa Moudy both had scores of 57. Ju- nior Emma Rainey round- ed added a 59. "It was our best score of the season," Lady Char- gers head coach Jarrod Gideon said. "I was pleased with the consistency of our scores. We are heading in the right direction." Pike Central, which played in the Washing- ton Invitational on Satur- day, Aug. 13, will take on Vincennes Lincoln and Washington in a three- team meet at the Coun- try Club of Old Vincennes on Thursday, Aug. 16, be- fore returning home to host North Knox on Mon- day, Aug. 20, at the Prides Creek Golf Course. PCMS boys' soccer team opens season with 9-1 victory over Southridge Jonas Martinze and Joey Ridao scored two goals each to lead the Pike Central Middle School boys' soccer team to a 9 -1 season-open- ing win over visiting South- ridge on Monday, Aug. 13. Also scoring goals for the Chargers were Isaac Bur- dette, Gabe Jones, Nolan Nelson, Chase Ridao and Cameron Roy. "Xavier Shoultz did not score but did a great job leading the defense the whole game," said Pike Central head coach Tanner Gray. "We have been practic- ing three to four times a week all summer and I'm so pleased with how much the team has improved since the first practice," Gray added. "I have a hard-working and talented team that will be ready to challenge any mid- dle school soccer team in the area. The future of Pike Central soccer is bright." In the B-game, South- ridge defeated the Char- gers 2-0. "I'm very happy with the effort showed in the B- game," Gray said. "It was the first competitive soccer game for many of our young- er players. (B-team coach) Colin Mahoney and I both agree the team only got stronger as the game went on. Chase Denton played a great game in goal, Cade Morgan and Ryan Whann held down the defense and Riley Mosby and Blake Cooper created many scor- ing opportunities from the wing." Pike Central will host Gib- son Southern on Thursday, Aug. 16. The varsity game will start at 6 p.m. with the B-game to follow at approx- imately 7:30 p.m. The Char- gers will play at South Spen- cer on Saturday, Aug. 18. PCHS boys' tennis team falls in season-opening match The Pike Central High School boys' tennis team opened its season on Mon- day, Aug. 13, with a 5 -0 loss at Northeast Dubois. At No. 1 singles, Pike Central sophomore Ethan Huck lost to Jeeps junior Reece Bauer 6 -0, 6 -0. At No. 2 singles, Pike Central junior Dalton Wil- liams lost to Jeeps junior Ethan Ziegler 6 -0, 6 -0. At No. 3 singles, Jeeps junior Ross Mehringer won by forfeit. At No. 1 doubles, the Pike Central team of se- nior Kyle Williams and ju- nior Quinton Sorgius lost to the Jeeps' team of sopho- more Lane Kneis and Luke Harder 6 -2, 6 -0. At No. 2 doubles, the Jeeps' team of sopho- mores Logan Mehringer and Tucker Neukam won by forfeit. "We didn't hit the ball as consistently as we needed to," Chargers' head coach Brent Beck said. "I felt we were more comfortable on the court during the scrim- mage (on Saturday, Aug. 11, at Loogootee) than we were this evening." "We made too many mis- takes from the baseline, and in the doubles match, we tried to over hit the ball too much and lost the men- tal game against our oppo- nent," Beck added. "The doubles match had a lot of close points. Unfortunate- ly for us, we made the mis- takes during the big points or lost focus." Pike Central will host North Posey on Wednes- day, Aug. 15, at 5:30 p.m. On Saturday, Aug. 18, starting at 10 a.m., the Chargers will host the Pike Central Invitational, which will also feature Evansville Bosse, North Daviess and South Spencer,. and on Monday, Aug. 20, Pike Cen- tral will host Gibson South- ern at 6:30 p.m. Chargers' JV boys' soccer team places 3rd in tournament The Pike Central High School junior varsity boys' soccer team finished third in a four-team tournament held on Saturday, Aug. 11 at the Gospel Center Church. The Chargers opened the tournament with a 4-2 loss to Southridge. Soph- omore Hunter Capehart and junior Samuel Henson scored goals for Pike Cen- tral while freshman Devin Carlisle had one assist. In the second game, Henson scored both goals in a 2-0 victory over Evans- ville Harrison, while soph- omore Sammy Ballard – aided by freshmen Shane Morson and Reece Ashley and juniors Jaden Mont- gomery and Andrew Clark on defense – recorded the shutout in goal. Registration open for the 7th Annual Heartland Half Marathon scheduled for Labor Day weekend The 7th Annual Heartland Half Marathon is scheduled for Labor Day weekend on Saturday, Sept. 1. The event will once again include a half marathon, a 5K, and a team challenge. Cash prizes will be given to the top three male and female half marathon fin- ishers. First place will receive $ 500, second place $250, and third place $100. The races will begin 7:30 a.m., Eastern time, in the shadow of the Jasper Train Depot along the Patoka Riv- er and will finish in the shade at Dave Buehler Plaza, just a stone's throw away from the starting line. The hilly, scenic course takes runners through com- mercial and residential areas with challenging peaks mid- way through the route. A fter the midway point, the course largely flattens out through to the finish. The 5K starts and ends in the same location as the half marathon, but splits to take a different course very close to the start of the race. The team challenge is a re- lay comprised of a four-per- son team and follows the same course as the half mar- athon. The first team member will travel 3.8 miles, then pass along his/her timing chip to the second member. The sec- ond member will cover 4.05 miles, the third member 2.5 miles, and the final member 2.75 miles. The registration fee for the half marathon is $70. The registration fee for the 5K is $25. The registration fee for the team challenge is $25 per person/$100 per team. Pre-registrants will receive a technical shirt, and the first 500 half marathon registrants will receive a special gift. A free training group will meet every Sunday at 7 a.m. Eastern time, at Downtown Running and Fitness located at 331 Mill Street. This train- ing group is open to the pub- lic and participants are free to run/walk at their own pace. The Heartland Half Mar- athon, 5K, and Team Chal- lenge are being coordinated by DC MultiSport, a non-prof- it organization dedicated to promoting health and well- ness while giving back to lo- cal communities.
