(USPS 604-340) Area Reunions Cub Scout registration set for August 28 On August 28, boys and girls in kindergarten through fifth grades (ag- es 5 -11) can join Cub Scout packs by going to the Win- slow or Petersburg Elemen- tary schools from 6:30 -7:30 p.m. to register. "Now is the best time to register and start your year in Scouting," said John Harding, Buffalo Trace Council Scout Executive. "Cub Scouting, like other Scouting programs, has a proven track record of pro- viding strong leadership skills, encouraging a high- er standard of academic achievement, and creating stronger ties to the commu- nity for its members." The goal of the member- ship campaign and regis- tration event is to bring Cub Scouts to as many youth as possible, in a familiar and convenient way. Boy Scouts of America is the nation's foremost and most wide- ly-recognized program of leadership, personal devel- opment and growth. The or- ganization is making a his- torical change this year, opening Cub Scouting up to both boys and girls. Scouts BSA programming for girls ages 11-17 will begin next year. "Scouting complements other extracurricular activ- ities because it helps kids be at their best in every way," said Harding. "Scouting is also affordable. Joining fees vary by location, but are rela- tively low compared to other activities, and financial as- sistance is available." The Boy Scouts of Amer- ica offers adventure oppor- tunities for all age groups. Cub Scouts is for boys and girls who are in kindergar- ten through fifth grade. In February 2019, the program currently known as Boy Scouts will become Scouts BSA, welcoming girls to work towards the renowned Eagle Scout rank. This pro- gram invites boys, and soon girls, age 11-18. Ven- turing, which has included girls since the early 90's, is a co-ed program for young men and women ages 14-20. To find an active unit, vis- it www.beascout.org and search by zip code, or call 800 -264-5246. 2018 budget. However, Frontier billed them 70 percent of the full year con- tract despite it only being a fraction of the year they used service from Frontier. Sheriff Jeremy Britton told the council the per di- em for housing state and other counties' inmates in the Pike County Jail may go up next year or the near future. Britton said Pike Coun- ty currently houses 24 Vanderburgh County in- mates and six Indiana De- partment of Corrections inmates. The county col- lects $ 35 a day for each. That rate has not changed since Pike County built their jail in the early 1990s. Britton said the Commis- sioner of the Department of Corrections said that rate should be increased to at least $55 a day. How- ever, Britton said it more than likely will be $50 to $55 dollars. If Pike County contin- ued to house 30 inmates from Vanderburgh and the state, the increase would be $164,250 annually. Following their month- ly meeting, councilmen went into an all-day bud- get hearing meeting. Dur- ing it, they heard from all department heads about their requested budgets for 2019. They will meet again following their Tues- day, September 11 meeting to actually set the budgets. COUNCIL Continued from page 1 Young stops at Cakes and Coffee Indiana Senator Todd Young stopped in Pike County last week and met with the Pike County Econom- ic Development Council, then stopped at Cakes and Coffee in Petersburg to meet with several people. Above, he talks with Ray Stilwell. Young spent about 45 minutes with a group of about 15 people who gathered to talk with him at Cakes and Coffee. He had them introduce themselves and share their con- cerns about the country and then talked them about those issues.
