There were no postcards this week at Sweets Column Winslow, Ind. 47598 in the ol' mailbox. The Patoka River is al- most ready to overflow if we get a big storm in our area. We have had several days of heavy showers come down with lightening and thunder that brought the Patoka Riv- er up to its fullness and with the Clog the Patoka on July 7, the many stars had to have that life jacket on and watch out for all those tree limbs. More on the Clog the Patoka next week. Last week, or should I say since before June, we have had the temps in the 80s and 90s and the heat index for most of those days has been high, so high that we have reached 100 to 105 de- grees even on July 4. By July 6, the temps went down a bit and so did the heat index. The weekend was pleasant. Trees are still down and some are cleaned up from the last big storm a week ago. Norm and I have been cut- ting up some very big trees for firewood, and we have al- ready stacked three truck loads. We have more to cut up in our "Cabin Stars" field. Norm and I should have wait- ed, but yes the heat index was 100 plus. We had to take our time and had lots of water to drink, and we had wet cloths to wipe the sweat from the eyes. I hope you all had a safe July 4 like Norm and I did. The Ot- well July 4 parade was small- er than I have seen, but the heat index was again 100 -105 and the temp was 95 degrees. I waved at everyone who was in the parade from bands, cars, floats, horses, motor- cycles, many candidates and lots of fire trucks from sever- al locations around the area. Norm got lots of hand shakes and his named called out, but what was so amazing to see was when the Bishops were in their Skags, Sherry acted like she was about to run Norm down but didn't, she had the best time ever in the parade. We saw several Winslow stars there and the youngsters had a great time getting all that candy. We came back about evening time to see the fireworks, but I had to have my bowl of home- made ice cream as my tradition at Otwell's July 4 celebration. We set up our chairs in the bed of the truck and watched the trac- tors do their thing on the pulls, but it was amazing to watch when they packed up, two tractors and one puller in one semi trailer. Then the fireworks began and there were a few new fireworks that ended with the Amer- ican Flag and the National Anthem sung with more fire- works to conclude this year. It was 30 minutes of Ohs, Ahs and Wows. Steve Nelson was at our Winslow Lions Club meet- ing where we presented him with a check from the June 23 benefit, and pictures were taken with Steve and some of the Lions that helped in this benefit. Steve was so grateful to all of us Lions for helping him out when he needed it. Oh yes, we also fed Steve be- cause this was our meal meet- ing where Debra and Becky made lasagna and garlic bread, and several desserts. July and August are the hot months, so please hydrate and don't overwork yourself. Take lots of breaks if at all possible. Guess what, it's time to dim the lights on this week's ram- blings, but please keep an eye on family and friends, slow down and see all the wonders around you. Then as always, smile, wave and say hi to ev- eryone you see this week.
