A fter battling the Titans to a 0 -0 tie, the No. 6 -ranked Pike Central ulti- mately emerged victorious, winning 3-0 on penalty kicks by seniors Kyson Western, Ty- ler Meadors and Gavin Boyd. Sophomore back-up goal- keeper Noah Whann pre- vented penalty kicks by Gib- son Southern freshman Justin Barthel and junior Alex Mey- er from going into the goal be- fore the Titans' third attempt – by senior Trey Riggs – hit the front side of the left up- right and ricocheted away from the goal. • Senior Natalie Burkhart fired a 14-over-par 86 as the Pike Central High School girls' golf team placed 13th out of 18 teams in the regional tournament on Sept. 23 at the Country Oaks Golf Course. Burkhart had two birdies and five pars while break- ing the school record for a re- gional tournament score. The previous record of 89 was set by Courtney McMillen in 2007 and was tied by Natalie Bohnert in 2016. • The Pike Central High School boys' tennis team saw its 2017 season come to an end with a 4-1 loss to Forest Park in the semifinals of the sec- tional tournament on Sept. 27 at Jasper. The Chargers' on- ly win came at No. 2 doubles, as sophomores Andrew Clar- idge and Colin Craig defeat- ed the Rangers' team of junior Joseph Hurst and sophomore Caiden Persohn 6 -3, 6 -1. Pike Central finished the season with a record of 5 -13, includ- ing 2-6 against Pocket Athlet- ic Conference foes. • The Pike Central High School boys' soccer team made history when it closed out the regular season with a 1-0 victory at Forest Park on Sept. 30 to seal its first-ever Pocket Athletic Conference title. With the win, the Char- gers became the first boys' soccer squad in the PAC to go undefeated against con- ference foes while allowing zero goals. Senior goalkeep- er Tyler Tormohlen recorded a total of 61 saves in 559 min- utes against PAC opponents during the 2017 season. • Pike Central High School senior Halley Powers placed sixth out of 54 total runners to earn First Team All-Con- ference honors for the second straight year during the Pock- et Athletic Conference Girls' Cross Country Championship Meet on Sept. 30 at South- ridge. In the boys' division, junior Draven Huff placed ninth out of 53 total runners to earn First Team All-Confer- ence honors for the first time. OCTOBER • The Pike Central High School girls' soccer team saw its season come to an end with a 3-0 loss to Vincennes Lin- coln in the opening round of the sectional tournament on Oct. 3 at Jasper. Junior Bekah Luff notched 16 saves while making just her second start in goal for the Lady Chargers. Pike Central, which started the season 4-3-1, went 0 -6 -1 over their last seven match- es to finish with a record to 4-9 -2. • The Pike Central High School boys' soccer team saw its bid to repeat as sectional champions come up short as the Chargers – after battling Washington to a 0 -0 tie – lost 3-0 on penalty kicks in a semi- final match at the Gwaltney Sports Complex in Washing- ton on Oct. 4. With the loss, Pike Central – ranked No. 5 in Class 2A in the Indiana Soc- cer Coaches Association's fi- nal poll – ended the season with a record of 15 -3-1. • The Pike Central High School boys' cross coun- try team advanced to the re- gional meet for the first time since 2011 after freshman Ijaa Chambers placed 10th out of 65 total runners to lead the Chargers to a fifth-place fin- ish in the sectional meet on Oct. 7 at South Knox. Four members of the girls' cross country team – senior Halley Powers, senior Cailey Fur- man, freshman Lauren Young and freshman Jenna Meyer – also advanced to the regional meet as individuals. • Pike Central High School senior Kyson Western capped off a stellar four-year career by being named the Pocket Athletic Conference's Player of the Year for boys' soccer. Western scored a total of 32 goals – falling just one short of the school record of 33 goals set by Colton White in 2016 – and had 22 assists as the Chargers went 15 -3-1, includ- ing a perfect 7-0 in the PAC to win their first-ever confer- ence title. Senior Tyler Tor- mohlen was named to the All- PAC team at goalie while se- nior Gavin Boyd received the most votes among the PAC's defensive players. Also named to the All-PAC team was se- nior Breyton Booker, who scored 10 goals and dished out seven assists. In addition, three Chargers – sophomore Ethan Scott and seniors Tyler Meadors and Cameron Hen- son – received honorable men- tion. • The Pike Central High School volleyball team's sea- son came to an end with a 25 - 22, 25 -21, 25 -15 loss to Princ- eton in the semifinals of the sectional tournament at Sul- livan on Oct. 14. Junior Taylor Lamey had a team-high eight kills and senior Brook Nalley had five kills and three ace serves as the Lady Chargers fell to 9 -20 with their seventh consecutive loss. • Pike Central High School's Halley Powers, Draven Huff and Ijaa Cham- bers advanced to semi-state during the regional cross country meet held Oct. 14 at Prides Creek Park. Powers, a senior, placed 20th out of 86 total runners in the girls' di- vision – with a personal re- cord time of 21:04 – to fin- ish seventh among the re- gional's top 10 individuals from non-advancing teams who qualified for the semi- state meet. In the boys' divi- sion, Huff placed 22nd out of 90 total runners with a time of 17:13, while Chambers, a freshman, placed 25th with a personal record time of 17:24. Huff finished eighth and Chambers finished 10th among the regional's top 10 individuals from non-advanc- ing teams who qualified for the semi-state meet. • Pike Central High School senior Taylor Deffendoll was named to the Pocket Athlet- ic Conference's All-Confer- ence team for girls' soccer. Deffendoll scored 16 goals – including six against confer- ence opponents – as Pike Cen- tral went 4-9 -2, including 1-5 in the PAC. • The Pike Central High School football team saw its season come to an end with a 63-6 loss to host Gib- son Southern in the opening round of the sectional tourna- ment on Oct. 20. The Char- gers ended the season 2-8, including 1-6 against Pocket Athletic Conference foes. • Pike Central High School senior Halley Powers placed 80th out of 176 total runners during the girls' cross coun- try semi-state meet at Eagle Park in Brown County on Oct.
